What Are Virtual Cells? centuryofbio.com/p/virtual-cell Two months ago, I started working on an essay to answer this question. The goal was to cover a few of the recent research results. Simple as that! Instead, I went down a rabbit hole exploring ideas around cellular simulation leading as far back as the 1980s... (I have a problem!) While "virtual cell" is a buzzword, there are several distinct research programs that are making real progress on creating computational models of the fundamental unit of life. For decades, researchers have been carefully crafting mathematical models to simulate the emergent dynamics of cells, starting with the smallest and simplest free-living organisms found in Nature. Now, powered by new technologies—specifically, AI and omics—many labs and companies are racing to learn "the statistical shape of Life" directly from data. You can read the full story about the evolution of virtual cells at CoB.

20th-century anthropologists called romantic love a Western invention – our new paper, with data from 9 non-WEIRD societies (N = 937), finds high levels of passion, intimacy & commitment everywhere, adding evidence for the universality of love hypothesis. Link to the pdf below!

@science_seeds So anyone can submit to the Seeds Of Science blog? I thought it has become a "best of the Internet" (re-)publication. Do you still have the purpose of helping new scientific ideas emerge? Do you have a link with the new rules of your organization? Thanks a lot.

Any experts in dark energy/matter available to give a quick batshit crazy/maybe not-so crazy judgement on a paper that was just submitted to us? :)

@chrisfmasse yea they submitted it to the blog, but we still want to do a brief pre-publication review before sending it out

> be plant > leaves attacked by insect > warn neighbors by releasing molecules into air > neighbors get the signal > neighbors trigger molecular cascade and "talk to" soil bacteria > soil microbes "increase plant growth and enhance plant defences." Plants are highly underrated.
