In the summer of 1943, the sleepy English village of Bamber Bridge hosted an absolutely wild scene. American troops started shooting at each other. Right there on allied soil. To figure out how things went off the rails, you have to look at the massive cultural divide between the US and the UK back then. Around 130,000 Black American GIs cycled through England. The British didn't have Jim Crow laws. To them, these guys were just allies fighting the same war. In fact, locals often pointed out that Black troops had way better manners than white GIs. People actually used a snarky little catchphrase for the white Americans. "Overpaid, oversexed, and over here." The American top brass hated this fraternization. They tried to shove their own rules down the locals' throats, demanding pub landlords throw up a color bar to keep Black soldiers out of white hangouts. The British fired back with some brilliant malicious compliance. Pissed off by the sheer nerve of the request, pub owners just slapped "Black Troops Only" signs on their front doors. It was a genius move. They legally locked out white American soldiers and Military Police. The whole powder keg blew up over practically nothing. White MPs walked into Ye Olde Hob Inn one evening. They tried to bust a Black private named Eugene Nunn. His crime? He wore a field jacket instead of his dress uniform and didn't have a pass on him. The local regulars and the landlady immediately stepped in to back the kid up. The shouting match quickly turned into a brawl. Then, the MPs pulled their guns. Word travels fast. A rumor hit the 1511th Quartermaster Truck base that MPs had just shot a Black soldier in the back. Total panic set in. The men seriously feared a lynch mob was coming for them, so they smashed into their own armory and grabbed rifles and machine guns. Around midnight, MP armored cars rolled into town. A full-blown firefight kicked off in the middle of a quiet English village. The fallout was heavy. One man died. A Black private named William Crossland. Seven others on both sides took bullets. The army eventually crushed the riot and hauled 32 soldiers in front of a court-martial. The brass threw the book at them, handing down guilty verdicts for mutiny and weapons charges. They handed out brutal sentences. Up to 15 years of hard labor. But the story takes a sharp turn. General Ira Eaker, commander of the US 8th Air Force, caught wind of the mess. He looked over the files and pulled a move nobody saw coming back then. Instead of rubber-stamping those harsh sentences, Eaker pinned the lion's share of the blame squarely on the white officers and the military police. He flat-out stated that racial prejudice and garbage leadership caused the bloodbath. He didn't just slash the prison terms—getting a lot of those guys back in uniform within a year—he also ordered the army to mix the MP patrols. White and Black cops riding together. He completely cleaned house, tossing out the toxic officers at the base. A simple pub fight and some stubborn English locals literally forced the US If you want more of the dark, unfiltered stories they leave out of the textbooks, join @histortwistory.

They came to divide the room… the room disagreed. In June 1943, the village of Bamber Bridge became the site of a violent clash between American troops stationed in Britain. At the time, the U.S. Army was still segregated, but British society was not. Local pubs openly served Black and white soldiers together, and many residents saw no reason to follow American racial policies. This created tension the moment U.S. Military Police tried to enforce segregation on foreign soil. The situation escalated when Military Police entered a pub to arrest Black soldiers. Locals immediately intervened, questioning why segregation was being imposed in their town. The confrontation spilled into the streets as more troops were called in. Armed units surrounded the area, and what began as an attempted arrest turned into a chaotic exchange of gunfire between American personnel, involving both Black soldiers and Military Police. The incident, later known as the Battle of Bamber Bridge, exposed a major cultural divide. British civilians largely rejected segregation, while the U.S. Army was still enforcing it within its ranks. The clash forced American command to address internal tensions and rethink how these policies played out overseas. It remains one of the clearest examples of how local resistance challenged segregation during the war. 📷 : only for reference © Witty Historian #archaeohistories

I always quite enjoyed this weasels meltdowns, they seemed somewhat more authentic, like he was having a genuine breakdown when things didn't go to plan. Lately though, he's played up to it much more and below is another example of this. He clearly has the stream a few seconds behind the game so he can deliver lines with perfect comedic timing. Hardly surprising though, he used to do videos for Goldbridge and he clearly knows how to get those fake rage viral clips. He's learnt from the best bullshitter in the business.

A 21-year-old loading Coca-Cola trucks in Owatonna, Minnesota. Can't sleep after his night shifts. So he sits on the floor of his parents' basement at 2 AM with a MicroKorg synth on his lap. He has zero audio engineering training. Pressing buttons and turning knobs without knowing what they do. He builds a little "ping" sound, routes it through some guitar pedals, hums melodies over it in gibberish for a few days, then fills in the words. Three days. Done. Wasn't even his favorite song on the album. "Fireflies" went #1 in 26 countries. 10 million copies sold. Diamond certified. Hit a billion Spotify streams last month. Adam Young had no label, no producer, no co-writers, no strategy. He had insomnia and a $500 synthesizer in a basement in a town of 25,000 people.

🚨 THIS MORNING DOC’S BOOK LAUNCH IS A TOTAL CAR CRASH – NOBODY SHOWED UP, NOT EVEN HER OWN FAMILY! Dr Nighat Arif sat alone in Chesham with a pile of her new health book… zero fans, zero queue, just her and silence. Only TWO copies sold – one to the bookshop owner who cheered her on like a mate, and one to a kind neighbour she roped in! She filmed the brutal reality from her car: “No-one is coming… I’m not upset, it was humbling.” Turned the flop into a life lesson about real success vs social media likes.

Even by the BBC's standards the interview with the Labour Chair of Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee this morning on Radio 4 was baffling. He was there to talk about Iranian proxies setting fire to Jewish ambulances in London. And yet on three occasions he referred to the threat posed by "right-wing groups". Anti-semitism is rising on the extreme Right; but to give it any kind of equivalence with the Islamists who actually are blowing things up is deranged.

NICOTINE ADDICTS STOP RIGHT THERE Did you know that no matter what climate you live in.. unless you live in Antarctica.. you can probably NEVER PAY FOR NICOTINE AGAIN? Did you know that tobacco is *EXTREMELY* easy to grow? Did you know you can pay like 4 dollars for tobacco seeds and sow them in a patch of dirt you never look at or think about and give them basically zero attention.. maybe water them every now and then for the hell of it.. and soon you’ll have more sweet sweet nicotine than you’ll know what to do with? A few years ago I put some seeds in a spot near my bedroom window and forgot about them until the spring when I saw some plants with blossoms that look suspiciously like tobacco flowers.. low and behold it was tobacco. Since then I have harvested every year and the seeds just shake out of the pods and redistribute themselves as I harvest.. and then before you know it little sprouts come up and you’re back in business. No fertilizer. No replanting. Just wait for the leaves to yellow every summer and harvest. Literally zero effort. You can shred it and smoke it or you could just do what I do and twist the leaves up into bundles.. and then break off a piece and shove it in your cheek. Just like a zyn. Nature’s zyn. No chemicals. No weird ass like.. fiber glass or whatever they put in store bought chew. Hence no risk of cancer. How many weird ass chemicals do pouches have? I don’t know but a lot probably We’re talking about never having to leave the crib and stand in line and shell out for a pouch with.. a bunch of weird shit in it.. EVER AGAIN. Never having to pay for your nic buzz ever again. Never having to ask yourself “ah shit when does the store close again do I have time.. I need gas” did I mention that the seed pods have literally THOUSANDS of seeds making your little tobacco operation practically infinitely scalable almost immediately. Start with like 5 plants and next year you could have like 10,000 if you wanted to. Growing tobacco is FUN and EASY and EXTREMELY rewarding. It feels good to be self sufficient. It feels even better to be growing your.. own drugs essentially. Nicotine is poisonous to most animals which makes the plants naturally pest resistant and keeps away most buggies. They’re also beautiful with flowers that look like the trumpets of heaven. They’re handsome and green and the leaves grow BIG. If you don’t have space you could just plant seeds everywhere you see a patch of dirt in your city.. in the middle of the road or some place that doesn’t seem like any one individual “owns it” would be good. Or in a park or something. The more places you plant the more like you will have a crop that survives any opportunistic harvesters.. this is called guerrilla gardening GROW YOUR OWN TOBACCO YOU CAN DO IT I BELIEVE IN YOU

When the break for Ramadan was apparently booed by #LUFC fans during their game against Man City last Saturday evening - there were some very prominent voices who were asserting that, essentially, Leeds’ fans were all racist. When a few people tried to explain that the booing was not necessarily about Ramadan; and was likely due to: Pep’s tactical team talks, the lack of communication about why the game was stopped, the lack of visibility of the messaging on the board etc - Leeds fans were accused of making excuses. There was a break for Ramadan in the game today. Of the thousands of people standing around me there were perhaps a handful who tried to boo and quietened when there was no one joining in. Instead Leeds fans were singing: “We are the champions, Champions of Europe” - a song sung regularly since the 1975 European Cup Final injustice in Paris. I don’t imagine there will be many - or any - prominent voices that will now correct the narrative. It is much more interesting for some people to call fans of a club they (presumably) hate - racist, than it is to listen, and to express nuance - characteristics incidentally, which can cure people of racist ideologies. #LUFC and the city of Leeds has a proud history of anti-racism. 30,000 Leeds residents met Oswald Mosley on Holbeck Moor and kicked the British Union of Fascists out of the city in the 1930s. When Albert Johannasson was verbally abused by opponents in the 1960s, Billy Bremner would take retribution with his studs by very literally kicking racism out of football. And in the 1980s the National Front were expelled from Elland Road by a campaign led by #LUFC fan groups and fanzines. Leeds United does not have a racist fan base, there are racists everywhere. But it certainly is popular to call them so, while ignoring the nuance, circumstances and history.

You’re probably overwhelmed by the flood of battle damage imagery from Iran etc on your timeline, but take a moment to look at this photograph of Iran’s Chabahar Konarak Airport. Look closely at the holes punched cleanly through the roofs of the 4 hardened aircraft shelters by air-launched precision penetrator weapons. Four clean holes practically in a straight line. Notice how there are no chaotic scars of conventional bombing. Each entry point sits with almost elegant, geometric precision, spaced evenly, placed exactly where the structure is most vulnerable. The air strikes cleanly calibrated to penetrate the reinforced concrete and detonate inside, collapsing the protected space within while leaving the outer structure largely intact. It’s the visual signature of intelligence-led, precision-guided air warfare, where the goal is to kill the aircraft and infra inside. Just controlled, deliberate punctures that signal more than brute force (there’s plenty of that elsewhere). The targeting design itself here is the message: your assets are mapped, your protections are understood, and even your most hardened spaces are reachable at will.
