नीलाचल निवासाय नित्याय परमात्मने बलभद्र सुभद्राभ्यां जगन्नाथाय ते नमः || आषाढ शुद्ध द्वितीया हा हिंदू धर्मातील अत्यंत पवित्र दिवस असून या दिवशी ओडिशातील श्रीक्षेत्र पुरी येथे भगवान श्रीजगन्नाथ, भगवान बलभद्र आणि देवी सुभद्रा यांची जगप्रसिद्ध रथयात्रा मोठ्या भक्तिभावाने साजरी केली जाते. भगवान स्वतः मंदिराबाहेर येऊन भक्तांना दर्शन देतात. वैदिक साहित्यात रथ ही संकल्पना अत्यंत पवित्र मानली गेली आहे. ऋग्वेदात सूर्य, इंद्र, अश्विनीकुमार, उषा आणि इतर देवतांच्या रथांचे उल्लेख आढळतात. रथ हा देवत्व, तेज, शक्ती, गती आणि विश्वव्यवस्थेचे प्रतीक मानला गेला असून याच वैदिक संकल्पनेतून पुढे हिंदू धर्मातील देवतांच्या रथोत्सवांची परंपरा विकसित झाली. उपनिषदांनी रथाच्या संकल्पनेला तात्त्विक अधिष्ठान दिले. कठोपनिषदानुसार शरीर हा रथ, आत्मा त्याचा स्वामी, बुद्धी सारथी, मन लगाम आणि इंद्रिये घोडे आहेत. या रूपकातून आत्मसंयम, विवेक आणि परमात्मप्राप्तीचा मार्ग स्पष्ट केला असून रथयात्रेच्या आध्यात्मिक तत्त्वज्ञानाचा तो मूलाधार मानला जातो. पुराणकाळात रथयात्रेला स्पष्ट धार्मिक स्वरूप प्राप्त झाले. स्कंदपुराण, ब्रह्मपुराण, पद्मपुराण, भविष्यपुराण आणि भविष्योत्तरपुराणात विविध देवतांच्या रथोत्सवांचे वर्णन आढळते. स्कंदपुराणातील पुरुषोत्तम माहात्म्य मध्ये श्रीजगन्नाथांच्या रथयात्रेचे महत्त्व आणि आषाढ शुद्ध द्वितीयेला भगवान जगन्नाथ, बलभद्र व सुभद्रा यांच्या गुंडीचा मंदिरापर्यंतच्या यात्रेचे वर्णन केले आहे. महाभारतात श्रीकृष्णांनी अर्जुनाचे सारथी बनून रथावरच भगवद्गीतेचा उपदेश केला तर भागवतपुराणात अक्रूराने श्रीकृष्ण आणि बलराम यांना रथातून मथुरेला नेल्याचा उल्लेख आहे. जगन्नाथ रथयात्रेमागे अनेक पौराणिक आख्यायिका आहेत. देवी सुभद्रेची पुरी नगरी पाहण्याची इच्छा पूर्ण करण्यासाठी भगवान जगन्नाथ आणि बलभद्र तिला रथातून गुंडीचा मंदिरात घेऊन गेले. तेथे काही दिवस वास्तव्यानंतर ते पुन्हा श्रीमंदिरात परततात. वैष्णव परंपरेत वृंदावनातील रासलीलेचे वर्णन ऐकताना श्रीकृष्ण, बलराम आणि सुभद्रा प्रेमभक्तीत तल्लीन होऊन विलक्षण स्वरूपात प्रकट झाले. नारदमुनींनी हे दिव्य रूप सर्व भक्तांना सदैव दर्शनास मिळावे अशी प्रार्थना केली. भारतातील अनेक प्राचीन राजवंशांनी रथोत्सवांना मोठा राजाश्रय दिला. सातवाहन, गुप्त, वाकाटक, पल्लव, चालुक्य, राष्ट्रकूट, चोल, पांड्य, होयसळ आणि गंग राजांनी मंदिरसंस्कृतीबरोबर रथोत्सवांची परंपरा समृद्ध केली. चोल आणि विजयनगर साम्राज्याच्या काळात दक्षिण भारतातील भव्य मंदिररथ आणि रथोत्सव वैभवाच्या शिखरावर पोहोचले. पुरीच्या श्रीजगन्नाथ मंदिराचा इतिहास बाराव्या शतकातील पूर्व गंग वंशाशी निगडित आहे. राजा अनंतवर्मन चोडगंगदेव यांनी मंदिराची उभारणी सुरू केली तर अनंगभीमदेव यांनी ती पूर्ण करून रथयात्रेला राजाश्रय दिला. पुढे गजपती राजांनी ही परंपरा अखंड जपली. आजही गजपती महाराज "छेरा पहरा" विधीत सुवर्णझाडूने रथाची साफसफाई करतात. मध्ययुगात झालेल्या अनेक इस्लामी आक्रमणांमुळे श्रीजगन्नाथ मंदिरावर वारंवार संकटे आली. मूर्ती सुरक्षित स्थळी हलवाव्या लागल्या आणि धार्मिक परंपरांवर परिणाम झाला. अठराव्या शतकात मराठा साम्राज्याने श्रीजगन्नाथ मंदिराच्या संरक्षण आणि रथयात्रेच्या पुनरुज्जीवनात महत्त्वाची भूमिका बजावली. इ.स. १७५१ मध्ये रघुजी भोसले यांच्या काळात ओडिशा मराठा सत्तेखाली आल्यानंतर मंदिराला संरक्षण, राजाश्रय, आर्थिक स्थैर्य आणि यात्रेकरूंसाठी विविध सुविधा उपलब्ध करून देण्यात आल्या. ब्रिटिश काळातही जगन्नाथ रथयात्रेची परंपरा अखंड सुरू राहिली. या उत्सवाचे वर्णन अनेक इंग्रज प्रवासी आणि अभ्यासकांनी केले असून इंग्रजीतील "Juggernaut" हा शब्दही "जगन्नाथ" या नावावरूनच प्रचलित झाला. रथयात्रेतील तीनही रथांचे स्वरूप वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण आहे. भगवान जगन्नाथांचा नंदीघोष, बलभद्रांचा तलध्वज आणि देवी सुभद्रेचा दर्पदालन हे रथ दरवर्षी पवित्र लाकडापासून नव्याने तयार केले जातात. शेकडो कारागीर पारंपरिक नियमांचे पालन करून अनेक महिन्यांच्या परिश्रमातून हे भव्य रथ उभारतात. स्वातंत्र्यवीर सावरकरांनी अंदमानच्या सेल्युलर जेलमध्ये जन्मठेपेची शिक्षा भोगत असताना "जगन्नाथाचा रथोत्सव" ही विलक्षण तात्त्विक कविता रचली. या कवितेत त्यांनी जगन्नाथाच्या रथाला संपूर्ण विश्वाचे रूपक मानले आहे. काळ हा त्या रथाचा मार्ग आहे, ग्रह-तारे त्याच्या चाकांखालचा धुरळा आहेत आणि संपूर्ण विश्व त्या रथाच्या अखंड प्रवासाचा भाग आहे. स्वातंत्र्यानंतर जगन्नाथ रथयात्रेचा जागतिक विस्तार झाला. श्रीजगन्नाथांची रथयात्रा भारतीय संस्कृतीच्या अखंड आणि चिरंतन प्रवाहाचे तेजस्वी प्रतीक मानली जाते. #रथयात्रा #जय_जगन्नाथ #RathaYatra #Puri
