*Update* I communicated with Ken earlier, and I expressed my dismay over the Mayor targeting his family outside their private residence. I also asked him to reconsider his decision to withdraw from New York City. The goal now must be to stop the narrative that New Yorkers who worked hard to achieve the American Dream are somehow the enemy. Coming from a modest upbringing, working hard, and achieving the American Dream should never make someone a villain in America. Yet that is exactly the message too many are sending today. It is especially troubling coming from politicians who grew up with every advantage imaginable, yet lecture working people and self-made business leaders about struggle and fairness. New York has always been a city where people from humble beginnings could build something for themselves, create jobs, and give their children a better life. @NYCMayor must stop dividing our city by demonizing success and those who invested in our communities and helped keep New York strong. The people who earned the opportunity to live on Park Avenue want the same things as the people living on Park Place in Brooklyn: safe streets, opportunity, and a clean city where they can raise their families with dignity and hope. My message to Ken and to other business leaders in New York City is this: Stand your ground. Do not let irresponsible rhetoric drive you out of this city. Our futures are connected, and New York only succeeds when we stop dividing people and remember we are all headed toward the same destination: a successful city.

New York's highest court has ruled that rent rollbacks are legal. Rent guidelines boards are not obligated to raise rents, they can actually lower them. @BrianLehrer

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Trump and Netanyahu should never have started this reckless war in Iran. It’s time to end it and tackle the challenges we’re facing at home. New Yorkers need a more affordable city, not another never-ending war.

@MarkTreyger718 Nor do I see NYC Councilmembers prosecuted for brandishing guns at anti-Israel protestors. Double standards abound.

@MarkTreyger718 Mark, this has all been done under the umbrella of conflating criticism of Israel as anti-semitism. Yes, people do cross a line - both ways, but I don't see any supporters of Israel having their green cards or student visas stripped of them when they do anti-Muslim things.

Tonight, the NYPD and Commissioner Jessica Tisch did an extraordinary job ensuring worshippers could safely enter and leave Park East Synagogue. We are grateful for their preparedness, and leadership, particularly under very challenging circumstances. People come to shul for many reasons: to pray, participate in community programs, prepare for Aliyah, build community, or say a prayer in memory of a loved one. No one should ever have to calculate personal risk before walking through the doors of a house of worship. No one!

Micah Lasher, a #NY12 candidate, described the protest tonight as “intended to create fear in the hearts of Jewish New Yorkers” that “should be condemned.” ⬇️

Houses of worship do not lose the right to safe access because someone disagrees with a program or viewpoint associated with that institution. No one is arguing against peaceful protest or the First Amendment. The question is whether New York accepts harassment and intimidation at the doors of houses of worship. We should not create litmus tests for who is religious enough or whether someone’s reason for entering a synagogue is sufficiently apolitical to deserve protection. We can protect free speech while also protecting the basic right of every New Yorker to enter and leave a house of worship safely and without fear. Those principles are not in conflict.

@MarkTreyger718 Well aware of what synagogues do, raised in an Orthodox one in your old district. When synagogues enter the political fray, they subject their congregants to these protected exercises of free speech. These horrible groups promoting settler violence can go elsewhere.

Synagogues, like many houses of worship, serve multiple purposes. People enter to pray, mourn loved ones, gather in community, participate in programs, or prepare to make aliyah. Last November, when protesters reached the doors of Park East Synagogue, a worshipper attempting to enter to say prayers for his late mother was met with flashlights shoved in his face and told to die because he was a Jew. People can strongly disagree over Middle East policy. But those disputes are not to be settled at the doors of houses of worship through intimidation or harassment. Every person has the right to enter and leave their house of worship free from hate and fear. Full stop.

@scottmstringer Yes, it's not a consolation prize. It's called a democratic (small d) election, and the incumbent is not entitled to a free pass. I'll be proud to have @bradlander as my Congressman. Someone who I can respect, who has earned it with decades of good work for the people.

@MicahLasher How about you condemning the use of a house of worship to sell stolen land, to promote the slaughter of generations of people lawfully living there. Do you have your head in the sand or are you just terrified of AIPAC?

Actions like the one planned for tonight by PAL-Awda outside Park East Synagogue are intended to create fear in the hearts of Jewish New Yorkers and stigmatize our community. This is part and parcel of the rising antisemitism that we are facing. Whatever your politics, whatever your views, this is not the New York way and should be condemned.  The right to free speech, even when it is condemnable, is sacrosanct. So, too, is the safety of New Yorkers. I am grateful to the NYPD for the work that I am confident they will do this evening to protect those entering Park East Synagogue and make sure that a protest does not turn into a gauntlet of hate through which Jews must pass.
Jeff Coltin@JCColtin

Anti-Zionist group PAL-Awda plans to protest the "Great Israel Real Estate Event" tonight at Park East Synagogue. Comes after council passed a bill further regulating protests outside houses of worship (but with a 90-day delay, so bill's not in effect yet) timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry…

Most of the @CVSHealth stores I go to in Brooklyn are in desperate need of a refresh. They're run down, dreary, dirty carpets, unappealing places to shop, let alone fill a prescription.
