a friend recently shared that she’s having trouble getting anything done because she’s become obsessed with a very old, 1,300-page novel and couldn’t stop reading it, and it turns out the novel is War & Peace, and I just can’t give up hope on this world yet.

In today's emergency application — i.e., a shadow-docket request — TikTok takes what feels to me like an increasingly common position of ~suggesting~ SCOTUS can just treat this as a cert petition if it wishes. Regardless, TikTok asks for a ruling on the shadow-docket request by Jan. 6.

Totally agree, and will miss Bill Greenblatt. He was a terrific photographer and journalist, and a great professional ally and friend. I didn't know he was ill, so I am shocked at his passing. My deepest condolences to his family...

Bill was a mensch. He always delivered - as a photographer and as an involved member of many communities. Bill’s lens on St. Louis will be missed. May his memory be a blessing.

Just a quick note to international reporters: Trump does not actually appoint his cabinet as a prime minister would. Most of these people need Senate approval. So it’s wrong to describe them as though their appointment has already taken place. Now, Trump is trying to circumvent that process, and it’s unclear that Senators will do their job and block the obvious traitors and misfits. But that’s another issue.

I know there were a lot of early takes last week that the Dem base stayed home. But as the votes continue to be counted, we now know that Harris won more votes than Biden in 4 of 7 battlegrounds and ran almost exactly even with him across the 7 states.

Harris lost all seven swing states, but in five of them - Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin - she's ending up with more raw votes than Biden got in 2020. If you still think all those swing state mail votes in 2020 were fake, idk what to tell you.

#OnThisDay in 1960, federal marshals escorted 6-year-old Ruby Bridges into William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Day after day, whites jeered at the Mississippi native and three other Black children, Leona Tate, Gail Etienne and Tessie Prevost, who became the first to attend all-white elementary schools in the South. Many white families left the school in protest, but Barbara Henry stayed and taught Bridges. Norman Rockwell depicted Bridges’ entry in his painting “The Problem We All Live With,” and she received the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001. There is now a statue of her outside the elementary school, which bears her name. “I was an innocent child that knew absolutely nothing about what was happening that day,” she recalled, “but I learned a very valuable lesson — we should never look at a person and judge them by the color of their skin.
