Ever wondered what a hand-drawn Google Maps would be like? Thanks to the USGS historical topo collection you can now find out.

@lefineder Seems like unnecessary advice. Every learned person already knows Cannae, Corinth, Caesar's assassination, the Sack of Rome etc. If they didn't how would they have context for any of the smaller events? And what would that say about our educational system?

One easy trick to help you learn Roman history is to remember all of the names of the important people and the dates when they did stuff.

@zetalyrae We are going backwards on this front. We used to have modular houses that were shipped across the world, staff included, in search of various things. Going from there to shops too seems doable.

They should make a modular mall with shops that plug in and out and can be shipped across the world, staff included, in search of maximal economic productivity.

Old playbook: “Get big to go global” New playbook: “Go global to get big” Some stats: - 22.9% Stripe users are making most of their money abroad (up 2x from 11.6% in 2020). - Of those, a quarter are making most of their money outside the top 10 global markets. - Among the top 100 ai startups on Stripe, the median earns most of its revenue internationally and sells into 55 markets within its first year. - As an example, Emergent Labs gets 70% of their revenue from abroad, and is doing material business (1%+ of revenue) in sixteen countries. 🌎🌍🌏

@geoffreylitt All this rambling to say: dangit Alan Kay was right again, of course, and do you know if people are talking about this particular way of his being vindicated: that educational software is actually great?

@geoffreylitt Kay was big on a specific type of learning though: simulations. But maybe this is where even spaced repetition ends up, going from fixed cards to premade cards to Math Academy and maybe eventually onwards from there?

@geoffreylitt Have you seen anyone revisiting the Dynabook after the latest wave of educational software? I used to find the learning emphasis of Kay's writing not very convincing, now after Math Academy, Kerbal Space Program, Factorio, Anki, etc etc I'm completely changing my view.

Without significant insulation that crosscuts their power to weight ratio, microturbines are difficult to sonically dampen, and fuel inefficient, low they are widely multifuel capable (important for logistically austere environments, where BTUs may need to be scavenged). I am partial to free piston linear generators, because of their form factor, noise profile, and potential for efficient, dynamically adaptive multifuel operation. However, the control problem (consistently returning the piston to top dead center with low variation each combustion cycle) is not yet solved for small, mobile FPLGs; all existing commercial offerings are large, stationary installations. I am making progress, though:

@CJHandmer @pmarca Facts: 1. Richard Stallman is very smart 2. Yet somehow he led desktop free software into irrelevance 3. His name is STALL ...draw your own conclusions.

Alphabet is actually short for making a bet on Alph, the sacred river. The "sunless sea" is an allusion to water-cooled data centers.

@JoshLipnik Great example of art deco minimalism. Without the tiny splash of color/interesting shape/ornamentation that would be a USSR storefront.

@Scholars_Stage @DefenseAnalyses Possibly not, but it certainly wasn't as big a lead as Perry's where his civ had pulled completely out of sight. At that point tech and magic start to blend together, it's hard to deal with an opponent where you don't even know what they can do.
