Fat loss is technically calories in vs calories out.
But that’s only the surface level.
Your body has defense mechanisms designed to resist weight loss. When calories drop, hormones and brain signals shift to protect your energy stores.
Leptin falls, hunger increases, spontaneous activity tends to decrease, and your body becomes more efficient with energy. As you get leaner, these signals get stronger, which is why maintaining a calorie deficit becomes progressively harder.
So while fat loss is still governed by energy balance, hormones and brain regulation determine how easy or difficult it is to sustain that deficit.
That’s why the smartest approach is to coax yourself lean rather than force it.
Use a calorie deficit you can sustain.
Eat enough filling protein.
Keep a balanced intake of carbs and fats.
Follow a consistent eating framework.
And allow some flexibility so the diet doesn’t feel overly restrictive.
For people with a lot of fat to lose, fat can come off quickly because their body is metabolically comfortable releasing stored energy.
But as you get leaner, your biology starts pushing back.
Fat loss is still calories in vs calories out, but your body’s hormonal and neurological systems determine how difficult it becomes to maintain that deficit over time.
