In fairness my siblings and I were all homeschooled and all we did was get full rides to college, write speeches for presidents, become senior admin officials and decorated war heroes while on the other hand Jennifer Welch has a podcast.

I’m only gonna do this once, because there’s only so much time one can devote to bad faith attacks, but The Bulwark overall has been extremely Platner-skeptical, while still endeavoring to analyze his popularity with Maine voters. I disagreed with this take at the time, but JVL is clear in this piece that he doesn’t like Platner and worries about populist movements in general. As he says in this piece: “That’s a powerful thing but I will be honest: I do not like it. Not one bit. I’ve seen that movie before.” He also makes clear at the top of the piece: “This is not a brief for (or against) Platner. I’m only trying to analyze what likely will happen, I’m not arguing for what should happen.” This is also annoying to me personally since I’ve taken so much heat for being unwilling to get on board with Platner from the Left. Anyone who has actually listened to us wrestle with the Platner dynamic knows that this characterization of The Bulwark is a lie.

It’s odd and disturbing. Jenny Racicot’s description in Politico Monday of Graham Platner’s treatment of her — including rape — is not wildly different from Lyndsey Fifield’s description to the New York Times about a month ago of Platner’s treatment of her. Fifield described a violent, angry, erratic man who sought to control her but couldn’t control himself; after that report, almost every Democrat offered a mealy mouthed statement that all allegations must be taken seriously but that they believed Platner’s denial.
But Racicot’s allegations were treated dramatically differently than Fifield’s. Within hours, the Maine Democratic Party, Representative Ro Khanna, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Senate Majority PAC, and Senator Elizabeth Warren withdrew their past endorsements. (Warren had called Platner, “My kind of man.”)

Because the U.S. political landscape is full of creeps, cretins, con artists, crooks, and cads of every kind, and it always will be. If the media has any useful role to play in our system, it is to look beyond the spin and the campaign-crafted image and to tell the world who these candidates really are, warts and all, so the electorate can make an informed choice.
