As an AD with a child who plays sports, I understand the struggle of separating parent, coach, and administrator. My kid has been cut. He has sat the bench. He has had to fight his own battles when things were not going his way and he had to talk to the coach. My kid has found success. My kid has learned to work hard. I have never once spoken on his behalf to a coach. Why? Because learning to advocate for yourself and overcome adversity is what shapes you into who you become. Growth does not come from protection. It comes from perseverance. I do this because I love him.

One of the top moments for me yesterday was after the game when the whole team crashed Caitlin’s interview. This is a TEAM that wants to win a championship This is a TEAM that wants to be in INDIANA and play together This is a how a TEAM should look PERIOD

Transformational coaches know that winning is a byproduct of something bigger...culture. Build an environment where hard work is expected, integrity is required, and respect is the foundation. If your team thrives beyond the game, you’ve won where it matters most AND you will win on the scoreboard more often than not.

Greg Gard met with each player when NIL began. Max Klesmit, who had just transferred in, told him: "You gave me an opportunity to wear the jersey, that's enough" Gard: "I wanted to get up and hug him and kiss him" #Badgers

It’s easy to give your teammates high fives when things are going well. But, studies have shown that high fives & close huddles are most needed when things aren’t going well. ~ via @BallisPsych buff.ly/3vDKbHR

Instead of spending time focusing on winning a championship, do what it takes to BECOME a champion. A champion’s mindset won’t begin & end with games or winning a title. It’s a deep desire to compete: in practice, at home, in the classroom, etc. Excellence is a lifestyle choice!

Effort can overcome a lack of talent. But, talent can’t overcome a lack of effort. Effort is the great equalizer. Talent alone won’t carry you, but disciplined, relentless effort will. 📽️@mattfostertv

I also love that John Cook told the story of telling DBK he was moving her from setter to libero. He said she said something that started with an F and a Y, and then walked out. She came to his office 3 days later with a letter on how she was going to support her team no matter what. That team elected her captain and they won the national title. "That's when I knew she would be a great coach" -John Cook in his presser. #NCAAWVB

Build Relationships Off the Court. A secret to coaching: Players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. ✔ Ask about their day. ✔ Show up for their other activities. ✔ Get to know them. When players feel seen, they’ll run through walls for you.
