One of the funny things I’ve learned from my travels to Israel this year is that Israelis think that the so-called “Iranian opposition” are basically all retarded. To be clear, I’m talking about legit Israelis with IDF training, not just western jews. When Iranians opposed to the Islamic regime meet Israelis, the questions they ask are direct and probe the logistics of the situation: “Why aren’t you organized?” “Who is your leader?” “What is your plan?” “What kind of resources do you have?” “What kind of resources do you need?” “What weapons do you have?” “What weapons do you need?” “What’s your roadmap?” And the typical reply from our side is something like: “Well we organized a human rights march in Geneva” to which the Israeli reply is “ok thanks you can get the fuck out now”. They don’t waste time, because they have no time to waste. For Israelis, defeating the Islamic Republic is, given the Islamic Republic’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, an urgent and existential problem. The Israelis know someone will have to pay the cost in blood to remove the mullahs from power, and the question they pose to Iranians in the opposition is: “will it be your blood or ours?” There is an implicit “because if it’s going to be our blood, then it will be on terms” that goes unsaid. Promoting Iranian nationalism, as Israel has done by branding this current operation “Rising Lions” (an homage to the Lion on the Iranian national flag before the Islamic Republic) is Iranians best hope for this conflict, but it isn’t the only option. Israel could potentially accomplish its strategic objective by promoting a “free Kurdistan” and exploiting the ethnic divisions between Iranians to create smaller, conflicting states that pose less of a threat to Israel individually. Iranians might be offended by this, but if Israel is paying the cost in blood to take out the mullahs, then it is only reasonable that they set the terms. By starting their campaign against the Islamic Republic military leadership & infrastructure, Israelis have given freedom-loving Iranian nationalists an opportunity to rise up and take power from the now-weakened mullahs, but that opportunity won’t last forever. They aren’t going to tolerate a protracted war where they live in constant fear of another Islamic Republic ballistic missile barrage. Israel might have started the job to overthrow the mullahs, but for this conflict to conclude how Iranian nationalists want, resulting in a strong and secular Iran, then Iranians need to help finish it. So when Israelis say “it’s now or never”, I am taking them at their word, and I encourage my fellow compatriots to do the same.
