Trump is trying to separate the US from Israel so Iran can't link Lebanon to the deal he wants
But let me take it a step further than this. I think Iran's decision to attack Israel was predicated on media attention. It was Iran trying to give the anti-Israel media/social media crowd a talking point to drive a wedge between the US and Israel
In reality that wedge does not exist but Trump is playing it off as such in order to push Iran to a deal
Still don't think Iran is going to give him the deal he wants, but this moves us one step closer to finding out if Iran is serious or not

My assessment is that Netanyahu is going to respond.
He has a rare opportunity to demonstrate to the entire region that Israel can be trusted - and that he does not fold, even in the face of Trump.
He is receiving quiet approval via a private call from Trump - who will publicly disavow the move, for the reason I outlined earlier: the Saudis.

I think that people do not understand the Trump 5D chess: Trump must show the Saudis that he is not escalating. Trump wants to prevent Iran from firing on Gulf states. So his move: Well I told Israel not to respond - so the US is not involved but If Israel retaliates and Iran retaliates - that is their business not mine and not the gulf states.
