Nigel Farage says Keir Starmer has called him racist “and by implication Reform supporters and sympathisers are racist.” This is the BIG challenge for PM. Do people hear his attack on Nigel Farage and think - hang on, he’s calling me racist too! PM says he isn’t.

At some point in the next 4 years, could the coverage of US elections perhaps develop from “with 34% of Kentucky counted, it’s 68-32” to the crazy concept of “with 34% of Kentucky counted, it’s 68-32…which is x% up on last time for Dems/Republicans”? It’d be quite handy…

@wallaceme I was a Lambeth councillor 2002-2010 and have fond memories of being "organised" by Morgan. If anything this article downplays my impression of his influence on the 2006 election

@defossardf It's a bit embarrassing that you think bobbing means engaging and that you can't see any way of introducing a call list without reducing the quality of the debate (eg a need to be the chamber from the start until you're called)

Very embarrassing. The sort of thing which will accelerate the decline in quality of MPs. Replacing bobbing with call lists will mean MPs turning up at their allotted slots to read out pre-prepared speeches without engaging with the rest of the debate. Dire.

@DavidDPaxton @GavinBarwell It was not at all nebulous. It clearly specifies the three taxes that will be protected. How anyone is now wondering whether it applies to things like CGT is beyond me.

@GavinBarwell It was a hard promise in the fact they said they won’t raise tax. Rather than say ‘we will seek to improve…’ or whatever. But of course it was politician bollocks. So now they’re stuck defining it forevermore because the nebulous term was stuck next to a consequential claim.

I agree with Rupert - but the Conservative Government he and I were part of it often did this too ("strivers", "hard working families" etc)

@robpowellnews They didn't just say "no tax on working people", they said "no tax on working people so no rise in income tax, NI or VAT". I don't see how much clearer they could have been about what was protected from increases

That clearly leads to a debate about the honesty of the manifesto. Is it ok to say you'll protect working people from tax rises when some working people will be paying more tax because of other investments they hold? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Treasury minister James Murray on whether someone who works for a living but gets a bit of income from a few shares or property could pay more tax after the budget... "We're talking about where people get their money from, and so working people get their money from going out to work, and its that money that we're talking about in terms of those commitments we made around income tax and around National Insurance. That's what's important to focus on, where people are getting their money from, getting their money from going out to work".
