Excited to share our paper published in @CurrentBiology that explores the consequences of having multiple genomes in a bacterial model system and it’s benefits in a multidrug environment cell.com/current-biolog…

We used cell wall-deficient L-forms to understand if multiple chromosome copies in a cell provide any advantage. Could bacterial heterozygosity provide a similar adaptive benefit as multicopy plasmids, increasing the evolutionary success of these microbial survivors? (3/4)

So so happy to see @KapteijnRenee proudly holding her thesis 🥰. She is a meticulous and creative scientist with an eye for detail. I had an amazing time working with her in Leiden. Moreover she is a gem of a person, brings people together & very thoughtful as well! Hire her 🫶🏼

Great final talk by Samir Giri @iSamirgiri from @TypasLab @embl on “Impact of non-antibiotic treatment on antimicrobial resistance of human gut bacteria”. Systematic mapping reveals many examples of XR and CS between human-targeted drugs and antibiotics in human gut microbiota.

@eisharmhatre @IsbergRalph @KostChristian Interesting study, still have to read in detail but in our system when we tested plasmid transfer we did not observe it. Rather saw metabolite exchange via nanotubes. Sigal ben Yehuda s work shows plasmid transfer though, perhaps their group can shed some light on the differences

Yes. That picture you saw in introductory Microbiology (or Genetics class) that showed a pilus connecting 2 bugs: its transferring DNA between the bugs. The F pilus serves as a conduit for the DNA during conjugation pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Chains that we use can be gold or pearls but bacteria make their own, in this case the Formosa sp. makes chains of vesicles! They first make tubes that pearl into connected vesicles. These vesicles have proteins and enzymes on the surface which help them grow.#inktober2023day21
