Turning back to the leader of the opposition, the PM says he and Kemi Badenoch have something in common: "Our parties both had tough results at the local elections last week, the difference is she hasn't noticed," he says

NEW: Labour Parliamentary committee tells "those coordinating the statements and resignations to stop" FROM THE PLP BACKBENCH REPRESENTATIVES The local and devolved assembly elections were devastating. Good comrades lost their seats - with this outcome just the latest in a worrying trend of elections results for our party and episodes for our movement. As the backbench representatives of the PLP we are speaking out now to call for everyone in the Labour movement to work in a way that can ensure we will again be on the same team, and on the same page. We are grateful for all the MPs who have spoken to us, in confidence, and told us what they would like to happen next. We will honestly reflect those back to the Prime Minister when we meet him. We respect both those who have set out their objections to the Prime Minister and those who have voiced their support for the Prime Minister. But the scenes of the last 48 hours cannot continue if we are to address the causes of distress for all concerned. We know it is not in anyones interest to see an increasingly divided PLP descend into chaos. We would ask that those coordinating the statements and resignations to stop. We want to convey to all concerned the following which reflects our discussions with colleagues: • The rules of the Party are clear regarding challenging the Party leadership. Colleagues either meet those requirements or desist. There will be lasting damage if the current position continues. • We will continue in our role to convey the honest and heartfelt views of backbenchers to the Prime Minister. It is more important than ever that our politics is conducted in a way that is respectful and embodies the values we stand for. We will do that and expect the leadership and our colleagues to do the same so that Labour can again be a force for change in this country.

Off to Buckingham Palace to be the “hostage” ensuring HM The King’s safe return when he opens Parliament - a tradition dating back to Charles I. Not sure I’m looking forward to it, but glad to play my part!

@Leo_Iam_535 @SophyRidgeSky Exactly. When I was a kid news journalists verified the story - if they couldn't they didn't report it because it was pure speculation and rumour.

@SophyRidgeSky How about you try reporting the news rather than reporting your own speculation as if it were fact. You’re a fucking amateur and frankly should have no place in any sort of newsroom.

Yesterday morning on Downing Street it felt like things were about to tip over the edge. When we were told by No10 that the agenda for Cabinet was going to focus on international affairs and not leadership - we didn't believe it. But that is exactly what Keir Starmer did. In perhaps the most Keir Starmer move ever, he was saved by process. He told Cabinet that if anyone wanted to raise his leadership they could see him afterwards, one on one. And then refused to meet them. Now this morning Team Starmer are saying the moment of peril has passed. They say Streeting doesn't have the numbers and Burnham doesn't have a seat. But are those two things true? This morning - Wes Streeting - is going to finally get his meeting with the Prime Minister. What happens will be critical. Will he ask the PM to set out a timetable for his exit? Will he resign? Will he launch a leadership bid? But in truth today might NOT be the day that Streeting acts. That's because it's the King's Speech later in the morning - a big set piece event where the government lays out its legislative priorities. Streeting - and others - may not want to derail the etiquette of that event - given the involvement of the King. Which all means that Keir Starmer might have a bit of time in hand... He's saying he's going nowhere - that the rebels don't have the numbers. Lyndon B Johnson says the first rule of politics is learning to count - and we'll find out soon who's done their sums right.

EXCLUSIVE: Ed Miliband has told Cabinet ministers that he is prepared to run for the Labour leadership if Wes Streeting triggers an imminent contest, The Times has been told The former Labour leader is understood to back Andy Burnham as Keir Starmer's successor if he is forced out of Number 10 in the wake of a mass revolt by Labour MP Miliband has previously told friends that he does not want the Labour leadership and is viewed as a potential "Kingmaker" for a Burnham premiership However the speed of the revolt by Labour MPs - more than 90 backbenchers, government aides and ministers have now gone public - has changed that assessment Two senior government sources said Miliband told cabinet colleagues he would be prepared to stand as the soft-left's candidate to stop Streeting from getting into Number 10 The claim was categorically denied by Miliband. A source close to the energy secretary said: "This is mischief making- it is categorically untrue that Ed told Cabinet colleagues that he was preparing to stand in case of a contest." thetimes.com/article/8bac9d…

#OTD 1994. Death of Labour Leader John Smith Having been 20pts ahead in the polls, he had taken apart the Major Government - mired in sleaze and incompetence: “If we were to offer that tale of events to the BBC…It might have even been too much for "Some Mothers Do 'Ave Them"

New idea. Next time we publish a report on a politician, I’ll keep the politician’s name blanked out for a week, and let everyone take positions before they find out who it is.

As I’ve said, Keir Starmer needs to go. But not through a Cabinet stitch-up or palace coup. And not through a snap leadership election designed to hand Wes Streeting a coronation. We need a proper democratic contest involving the whole Labour movement so we get this right.

Starmer’s project has failed. Cronyism and backroom politics - from Mandelson to McSweeney - have replaced principle. Labour must refocus and get back to our roots and core values.

🥀 Thanks to Labour & Plaid, we have shamefully high NHS waiting lists, the worst educational outcomes in the UK, and a lagging economy 🔵 It doesn't have to be that way! @WelshConserv have an ambitious and credible plan to get Wales working 🗳️Vote Welsh Conservative on May 7
