@Grey_Athena It will never not be funny to me that the so-called military genius looked at these overlapping fields-of-fire from Union artillery batteries overlooking an open field and he said "let's march our whole army through that."

@aStrayPancake @RedTeamReview He definitely knows about Oberyn Martell, no doubt about that, but he might not really be able to tell what his fighting skills are. The man has a reputation though so he might include it in the 3.

@aStrayPancake @RedTeamReview The only people who Jamie mentions possibly being able to cut him or require every ounce of skill and some luck are Gregor, Barristan, and Loras. Until he meets Oberyn a little later.

@RedTeamReview I can tell you with like 95% certainty it's Barristan and the Cleganes. It's fairly clearly spelled out in his inner monologues in the books He also thinks Loras Tyrell is more of a tournament fighter. I don't think he knows or cares about Oberyn Martell yet

@RedTeamReview The Mountain, Ser Barristan, and Loras Tyrell. He said he could outlast The Hound, knows Oberyn is a bad mfer but hadn't seen him fight so can't size him up, Jorah is exiled, no Bronn yet, and mocked Robb to his face about needing an army to beat him. That leaves those three.

Project Hail Mary review: 1: Best movie I've seen in quite some time 2: I wish I vibed with the Rocky/Grace humor more. I've not read the book since 2021 but from what I remember, I felt like the bulk of the comedic lines were between Grace and Stratt, not Grace and Rocky. Grace and Rocky had a more serious friendship in the book. Movie rocky feels like he is teetering on the edge of Big Bang Theory humor at times. 3: I was bummed we didn't get to watch them nuke antarctica 4: Them leaving out relativistic explanations for Grace not aging and Rocky having extra fuel was frustrating.

@JeffGreason Mass Effect had a cool way sci-fi way around that: quantum entangling 2 particles and flipping their quantum state back and forth (like 1's and 0's in binary code), so no matter how far apart they would, be the change in quantum state would be instant.

Today's #projecthailmary thought: In the book (and the movie, though it's less prominent there), there's no way for Grace to send electronic messages back to Earth, which is why the probes (the 'beetles') are there. Of course they're necessary to the plot, so it makes perfect sense to write the story that way, but is it really that hard to communicate between the stars? No .. though there's no known way around the speed of light lag, so such communications would take one year per light year and not be real time. But if you have a reasonably large spacecraft with a power supply and room for few-meter focusing optics, lasers can carry messages between the stars to receiving telescopes here on Earth or in Earth orbit. Light can be focused to a much tighter beam than radio waves -- so small that even from Alpha Centauri, you would have to point *at the Earth* rather than just *at the Solar system* See for example: Hippke, "Interstellar communication. I. Maximized data rate for lightweight space-probes." International Journal of Astrobiology (2019)

@JoKEas2 @esjesjesj 18 U.S.C. § 209 prohibits government employees from receiving salary supplementation from any source other than the United States for performing their official duties. The loan thing is legit though. As long as that purpose isn't explicitly stated. Otherwise it counts as a grant

@esjesjesj There's a loophole. As long as you don't say it's your intention, one could open a 501c3 charity and offer interest-free loans up to $2,000 to TSA employees, allow applications every 2 weeks, and after a couple of months shut down the charity, forgiving any outstanding loans.

@MacFarlaneNews I can't imagine what the financial liability is going to end up being. Every time an ICE agent stopped and even momentarily detained a US citizen I going to be 4th amendment lawsuit against the federal government and I don't see even this SCOTUS giving them an out.

CBS should launch a new sitcom called "Everybody Hates Bari." Democrats & independents don't want blatantly pro-Republican bias. And Trump fans want vein-popping ragebait. This was doomed from the start. Anyone outside the GOP ruling class knew it: status.news/p/cbs-news-rat…

To the immiserated proles of the Epstein Empire, this doesn't even look real. In the United States, "advanced" technology is a bumbling Waymo that won't get out of the way, or the Unit 8200 app that scans your face at the airport.

@erotica254 @nagasatish16 @biancoresearch If you think it's embarrassing that happened, imagine how embarrassing it is if the one and only time you scored a hit during a 3 week air war was 1 of only like 7 times in the history of modern warfare that a jet survived an AA missile.

And Trump just explained why there’s virtually no commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz right now. The Lincoln is ~600 miles off Iran’s coast. That gives it several minutes of warning time, plus an entire air wing, three destroyers, a submarine, and layered missile defenses. Opening the Strait is much harder. You’d need to send destroyers (or escorts) through waters that are often just a few miles from the Iranian coast. There, ships get only seconds — not minutes — to react to incoming missiles and drones. Commercial operators won’t move until the US Navy proves it’s safe. Until then, they’re sitting tight unless a deal is struck.

Trump on Iran: They shot 100 missiles at USS Abraham Lincoln, and every single one was knocked down on the sea.
