He gave a minor bite when someone picked him up while he was getting into trash. That’s it. Meanwhile, staff also say he’s friendly, takes treats, and allows petting. UPDATE ON SMOKE I wish I had better news… but this is the reality of what he’s facing. Smoke is severely heartworm positive. The vet said the moment his blood hit the slide, they could see them moving. He is that full of them. Because of how advanced it is, they could not safely sedate him… which means they could not suture his elbows—even though they are deeply infected and extremely painful. So right now, I am doing hydrotherapy twice a day on open, infected wounds… trying to give his body a fighting chance. He also has: • Hookworms and whipworms causing anemia • Elevated liver enzymes, which is very concerning • Fleas, and hair loss from old trauma—his body is covered in scars He is emaciated. And when you look at him… when you see the puncture wounds, the tearing wounds, the condition he is in… You don’t need someone to tell you what he’s been through. But here’s the part that gets me the most— Despite everything… He is gentle. He is kind. He still trusts. He walked up to me and asked for help. And I said yes. Even though we are closed for intake. Even though we are struggling. Even though we don’t even have a washer and dryer and I was at the laundromat when he found me. Because rescue is interrupting suffering. We started a GoFundMe to raise $10,000 for April’s bills. We have raised about half. And now we have Smoke. His care has added: • $1,300 for vet care • $600 for a kennel so we can safely house and treat him We need help. If you can donate—even a few dollars—it matters. Our work is suffering. We are no longer able to show you the reality of our work as it's not only heartbreaking but not easy viewing 😢. Our visibility is low and even after much begging funds are slow. We are building up our Instagram so that reliance on X lessens. Sadly it's the animals that are suffering. I have over 50 orphan pups in foster, orphans because their mom's were culled and yet I'm on here constantly begging for funds. There is a certain unfairness when you see certain accounts raise extortionate amounts in a matter of days and we and other similar organisations struggle to cover the basic costs. FROM FB: If I could bring home any dog, it would be Trumpet 💔 still there 4/14 w/ no interest “I don’t know how you do it,” is something I hear often when talking about shelter work and animal advocacy. I can’t really explain how I cope with things, how I set boundaries and compartmentalize. But I will say this…if how I felt about Trumpet was how I felt about every dog, I wouldn’t be able to keep showing up. This would break me. Trumpet came to the shelter right at a month ago. He was surrendered with several other pets, all of whom were in poor condition. While well intentioned, the person who had him never said no to a new rescue pup, and ended up with more dogs than they could adequately care for. You smelled Trumpet before you saw him. Covered in fleas, crust around his eyes, irritated skin…he was in rough shape when he first arrived. I met him while he was hanging out in the behavior office, and immediately fell in love. He just wanted to crawl into my lap, nuzzle into me, and be held. And I let him. I sat there and held him for as long as I could. Shortly after, I gave him a bath. He was a total ham. He let me scrub his face, his body, even his paws…which so many dogs hate. He’s estimated to be around 9 years old, and honestly, it felt like it might have been his first bath. He soaked up every second of that care, and left looking and smelling like a completely different dog. I hate when seniors are in the shelter, especially when they’re heartworm positive. I know he would be such an easy dog to foster. All he needs is a quiet room and a soft place to rest while he goes through treatment. Trumpet is so small. Only about 41 pounds, but in his kennel he somehow looks even smaller. He curls himself up, quiet and patient, like he’s trying not to take up too much space. I can’t look at him in there. I avoid walking by his kennel, because every time I do, I get a lump in my throat. I know how easy he would be. I know how much love he has to give. And yet, he’s spending months in the most stressful environment you could imagine. Life isn’t fair. He’s easy to walk, though don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry. He just meanders, stopping to say hello to everyone. He is SUCH a lover. He hasn’t done well with other dogs in the shelter, so he would do best as your one and only, or fully separated. Honestly, he deserves that. He deserves to be someone’s whole world. If you are looking for a low-maintenance dog who just needs a couch to sleep on…he’s your guy. I cannot stand that he is still here. He deserves so much more, especially when he only has a few good years left.
