This is misleading. The tax revenue from North Sea production over the past three years was less than half the £44 billion spent by the Government to protect consumers from high prices during the last fossil fuels crisis after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Claire Coutinho@ClaireCoutinho

Kemi is right. The taxes raised from a thriving North Sea, could be used to cut energy bills. Or…. under Labour you could send that money to Norway instead.

Climate has almost disappeared from our conversation. But it remains the most pressing challenge of our times. Last week the WMO said the planet is “more out of balance than at any time in observed history.” Energy security and climate security are not competing priorities.

Ed Miliband gets relentless bile from the right for his ‘ideological’ commitment to clean, cheap renewable energy - just as Nye Bevan once did for creating the NHS. Yet on March 25 97.7 % of our electricity was from renewables. A revolution is unfolding. observer.co.uk/news/columnist…

University of Oxford : maximising oil and gas extraction here would only save UK households up to £82 (€95) per year. A UK fully powered by renewable energy, would save households up to £441 (€510) a year on energy bills. euronews.com/2026/03/27/eur…

This is Lord Rothermere the owner of the Daily Mail. He lives in a massive mansion in the English countryside, but he pays no tax here because he identifies as French. While the Daily Mail is registered in Bermuda and pays no tax anywhere. That is his ‘Patriotism’.

I’ve been saying two things in response to the fossil fools calling for more drilling in the North Sea - both are cutting through. First is we don't set the price of our own North Sea oil and gas, second is we have very little left, around 10%. More drilling can't help us with this energy (price) crisis and the idea of some kind of oil self sufficiency for Britain is a fantasy. Now comes this revelation - the hundreds of licences the Tories issued, over a 14 year period, in pursuit of this fantasy - resulted in just one months worth of gas being produced. The reality is starkly different to the fantasy Farage and Badenoch would have us believe. theguardian.com/business/2026/…

Absolute humiliation for Trump. A national security expert points out Trump is desperately trying to negotiate the exact same Iran nuclear deal he ripped up in 2018. The US literally went to war just to get back to the agreement they already had. Total incompetence.

Watch Liz Truss spreading lies about Britain in USA helping to build a false narrative about us. Outrageous! Shame on her! If a former PM is actively undermining Britain’s reputation abroad, why are they still funded by the public for office, security and allowances. Those privileges should come with responsibility. 👀@lewis_goodall film on crazy MAGA world

Even I was shocked by what I heard at CPAC. MAGA has evolved and radicalised yet further. It’s convinced it must not only save the US but Western civilisation. Because in their mind, the UK and Europe has already “fallen” to Islam. Our special report 👇 youtu.be/t3Y_ozT_p3g?si…

🚨HOLY SMOKES: Trump spent weeks calling on Iranians to rise up and overthrow their government. They didn’t. Instead 8 million Americans rose up against his. In 3,000 cities. On the same day. The regime change he wanted happened in the wrong country’s streets. Iran’s Foreign Minister said the people being killed are dying because Trump wants to have fun. 8 million Americans said they’re not having fun. Philadelphia. Atlanta. Dallas. DC. San Francisco. New York. London. Tel Aviv. Scotland. San Diego. The uprising came home.

Rachel Reeves blaming forecourts is pure deflection. At 160p per litre: Tax: 80p Forecourt profit: 7p The government takes over 50%, which is around 10x more than forecourts. But somehow it’s the petrol stations fault? The public can see straight through this.

If you want to help bring down fuel costs for others, reduce demand. Oil is priced globally. More drilling here doesn’t stop price spikes. EVs and heat pumps already cut UK fossil fuel use by 14 million barrels in 2023. So the most effective thing you can do: Switch to an EV and / or a heat pump if you can. Every switch cuts demand, eases prices, and improves energy security. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. 🇬🇧#EV #HeatPump #CostOfLivingCrisis 🇬🇧

The UKs first 100% renewables day isn’t far away. When the sun shines and the wind blows, the world is a better place. 91.3% renewables. 6.8% dinosaurs. That’s the grid, right now. “But what happens when the wind isn’t blowing?” I see that sentence FAR too often. It’s pretty simple, we use a mix of what’s needed, gas, nuclear, imports, sun, wind, storage. That’s how grids have always worked. The difference now is we’re adding more wind every year, so even lighter wind still generates meaningful power. Solar capacity keeps growing, so even cloudy days produce energy. Batteries and interconnectors are scaling, smoothing out the gaps So it’s not “all or nothing.” It’s a system that’s getting stronger, more flexible, and less reliant on fossil fuels over time.
