@benonwine This is the oldest one in the book, but have some engagement from me as we agree William and Catherine will be a fantastic King and Queen.

Would you rather take £1 million upfront right now… 💷 OR Take 1p that doubles every single day for 30 days? 🤔 Most people get this wrong. Be honest.

@Hitchslap1 I know all of these because of what I read and what I watch. Several are French. Several more are Latin. A fair few are Greek. All anglicised as we are a magpie language. Several more vary in pronunciation depending on whether you are in the US, or from the North or South of UK.

You can literally test someone’s IQ in 90 seconds by asking them to pronounce 50 words. The more they get correct, the higher their IQ.

English is probably the only language where you can measure someone’s IQ by how well they know how to speak it. English has ~600,000 words. Do other languages have more words? Yes. But English is far better at describing things because it focuses much more on adjectives and adverbs rather than just nouns. Arabic has 100+ words for “Camel”. English has one. But English has 10,000 words that can be used to describe the camel’s appearance, temperament, character, physicality, etc. You get a much clearer picture of what this specific camel looks, sounds, and smells like. It’s much easier to appreciate a story like Romeo and Juliet when you view it as an evangelization arm of the English language (and culture), rather than just a homework assignment. This is likely the reason why the British were so dominant. They were significantly better at organizing and motivating their people *because of* their excellence of communication. English >

Oxford students in full revolt over ban on transgender rowers in the Women’s Boat Race. The Oxford University Boat Club has enforced British Rowing’s 2023 rules: only those assigned female at birth can now compete in women’s events. Trans and non-binary athletes must race in the Open category or sit out. College boat clubs are furious. Wadham called the move “disproportionate, discriminatory and impossible to enforce” and vowed to fight for the old rules. Somerville said it threatens their “values of inclusivity and friendship.” The Oxford University Rowing Clubs website has been rebranded with the transgender pride flag in protest. Captains voted 49-1 against the new policy and 24-8 against competing under it. The university says it must follow national governing body rules or lose club status and the right to hold competitions. Cambridge brought in the same ban last year. So no men to help them win eh?

@bortinez_ You are welcome as even with your beard I can tell you're a woman - it's your eyes and the way your face is structured. Come to the ladies, it's nicer and safer for you.

@SarahWoods66 I went once a few years back - I think I must have gone late in the week so it wasn't too bad, but my impression was that it was mostly marketing stalls with a few show gardens in the middle, so I haven't been back.

Not my usual tweet but I want a little rant. I got gifted 2 tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show so went with a friend yesterday. We paid for an overnight stay in a hotel, train fares and food. I can honestly say it was AWFUL. It was unbelievably busy with huge numbers of people making it impossible to walk - we were just shoved along by the crowd. I couldn’t see any of the show gardens because the fight to see them was 5 people deep. Even if you did get to the front you were being pressured to move on. We gave up after 3 hours and went to the Chelsea Physic Garden along the road which was a much welcome oasis of calm. The organisers of the show should be ashamed of themselves. Visitor numbers need limiting and I feel so sorry for anyone for whom this was a first time long awaited visit #RHSChelsea #RHSChelseaFlowerShow @GWandShows @GWandShows @The_RHS

@TexasTrash258 @terri0928 It will become a real issue should there be a time when Harry is ever in danger of actually coming to the throne. It would still be a significant issue if there were to come back to live in the UK and substantial amounts of tax payers money was spent on their security.

@shouldItypehere @terri0928 It may not be illegal but I think it would be unconstitutional since the rule is, no one not born of the body of the royal will be in the line of succession. Doesn't matter how far down the line.

Meghan Markle was not pregnant. Period. Full stop. Anyone who hasn't yet seen the undeniable proof that she wore a baby bump. Watch this video as she drops into a full squat in six-inch heels, knees together, and squishes that baby bump flat like a whoopee cushion. Then she stands up effortlessly as the bump makes a popping sound, then magically reinflates right in front of your eyes. Poof. Like a balloon being pumped back up.

@colinrtalbot Single stall loos aren't the issue - they are lockable and no-one is sharing the space with you. The issue is being in a multi stall facility with a communal area with a bloke.

@learning_yohei Why do Japanese people always ask the Americans these things? American English is just a dialect of English - ask a Brit, we invented the language (with a little help from the French, Germans, Vikings, Romans and Greeks)

@thinkingshivers OK Shivers, I much prefer your version. Claude's suggestion isn't better, and has AI cadence and that's really irritating. Trust your own creativity and keep AI out of your writing. If you want a different opinion, find a real person who you trust.

I submitted a draft of my short story to Claude for copy editing. Sometimes he’ll suggest a re-write of a particular sentence. My version: “She was just a rich girl, with a carelessness about her that could only come from being born into privilege.” Claude’s suggestion: “She was just a rich girl, careless in the way only privilege allows.” It's a matter of taste, but I personally think Claude's version is better. It's saying the same thing but more deftly. But when I swap his sentence in then plug the paragraph into Pangram, it goes from being high confidence that it's human to low confidence that it's human. If I keep doing this, will it start to read like AI slop? If I keep doing this, is it even my writing anymore? So I'm keeping my version, the one I think is worse, and I'm disquieted by the fact that there could be a better version of this story that I now need to specifically avoid.

@LNathan123 This is just pure vanity - look at me, I'm beautiful and so is my jam. I am a gift to the world, everyone must see my beauty and my jam. Thing is, no-one is asking for this so the vanity is obvious and a little risible.

@tuuu28283 @abdw_30 A lot is to do with tone of voice and context. If someone goes 'yeeeessss' in a long drawn out way and a furrowed brow, it can mean that they think what you just said is utterly mad.

I think you're absolutely right. But I also think they'll have to address it sooner rather than later because our voices are becoming increasingly louder with each passing day. Charles shouldn't leave this for William to deal with - it's incredibly selfish and unfair to leave that burden on his shoulders.
