We create & share stories that need to be told. Some will be tales from under-represented communities; others will be unearthed treasures.

@afalkhatib I didn’t realise this was already in use. Jeez that is awful and very scary. I’m so very sorry. The fact that you use your time now to helping mend the bridges between yours and Israeli cultures is so incredible Ahmed. I’m so grateful for your work.

I’ve been incredibly depressed, distraught, sad, and upset since reading yesterday’s detailed report on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the IDF’s targeting apparatus during the war in Gaza. The killing of over 31 family members of mine in Gaza City and Rafah (the two homes I was raised in) can only be “logically” and “reasonably” explained by the use of these new and error-prone tools and systems. I know my family well and have kept in close contact with them since I left Gaza – they are not members of Hamas and have nothing to do with militancy. There was no militant activity at both homes when they were struck, one at night and one during the day. The damage was immense and horrendous, likely thanks to heavy-weight "dumb" bombs that killed children as young as three and four months old who were shredded to pieces, with most of the casualties losing their heads and limbs, crushed by the rubble and experiencing extreme burns. I studied intelligence analysis and operations and am intimately familiar with the complex targeting science and mechanisms. We are light years away from being able to trust machine learning and algorithms to make intricate and consequential targeting decisions that kill human beings. The pace of bombardment in the early stage of the war makes me confident that there was pressure across the target acquisition chain to produce names & locations quickly and continuously, making the report’s allegations that human analysts merely rubber-stamped “Lavender”-selected targets very credible. I strongly believe that my family was killed in Gaza as a result of AI-generated targeting that was fed faulty intelligence and erroneously honed in on my childhood homes due to random attributes that were flagged by machines - that is the only reason to explain why the Israeli military would choose to callously kill dozens of people, few of whom were young military-age men. Using Gaza as a testing field for new warfare “innovations” and technologies is immoral and criminal; these are human beings, not statistics.

@tlsdip No I wouldn’t. But ‘I’ wouldn’t be ‘I’ in that case so … who knows. This is the worst part of the whole conflict for me - the generations of trauma on both sides that will know nothing but hatred. How to mend that?

@GSpellchecker @jk_rowling @RedsRepair95 And, to quote from Galaxy Quest, their debating technique seems to be "Never give up, never surrender." However wrong and insubstantial a foundation their ideas are based on. I'm beginning to like the ones who go straight to revolting insults as it saves wasting effort on my part

Yep. I'm still amazed all three of our kids chose to gestate inside me, because I thought it was 50/50 they'd come to term inside one of Neil's testicles. By coincidence, my father never gave birth out of his balls, either. Random luck or ancestral curse? I doubt we'll ever know.

At least on Twitter, the only people who still defend Israel’s conduct are dead-enders which means the quality of pro-Israel propaganda has declined significantly. People of good faith are finding it hard to defend Israel’s behavior, even if they’ve long identified as pro-Israel.
Tom Gara@tomgara

The replies to this are amazing, this guy constantly goes out of his way to criticize Hamas and show goodwill to Israelis and the replies here are just a string of “release the hostages” taunts

BREAKING NEWS: It's just been announced that Mark Rowley, Met police chief, is resigning after admitting his failure to properly police pro-Palestinian demonstrations. In his resignation speech he will say that Suella Braverman was right to call them hate marches.

@RamAbdu It’s not unprecedented. What the hell is the “fabric of the environment”. It’s quantifiable. You just did by claiming there were more victims than 3 other incidents. Use concise verbiage if you want anyone to take you seriously.

Since morning, this scene has unfolded at Al-Shifa Hospital and its surroundings. It's a massacre of unprecedented scale, annihilating not just lives, but also the very fabric of the environment. The number of victims is beyond quantification. The casualties exceed those of the combined massacres of Deir Yassin, Khan Younis 1956, and Tantura

A completely false argument. No one is “killing all the Palestinians” because they support Hamas. The ones being killed are the terrorists who attacked Israel and continue to threaten them, along with a historically small portion of civilians who unfortunately are victims in any war, although less so here. The only “depravity” that is relevant to this issue is that committed by Hamas on October 7.
Peter Beinart@PeterBeinart

Put aside the depravity of saying everyone in Gaza is fair game because Hamas won a plurality in the 2006 parliamentary election. @DouglasKMurray seems unaware that the election was also held in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Can Israel kill all those Palestinians too?

I’m sure many of you’ve picked up how much more blunt I’ve been lately. There’s a reason. I’ve spent a decade in progressive politics, and all I’ve seen is us circle jerk ourselves into further and further irrelevance. Every single progressive operative I know says it behind the scenes, even if they don’t say it publicly. You essentially have to never state your opinion as the ideas get crazier and crazier, or take your turn being devoured by the cannibal mob. October 7th was a real wake up call for me, seeing so many progressives literally cheering for terrorists, and declaring war on the dignity of our Jewish brothers and sisters in America. That was not something I was willing to stay silent on. The abuse I’ve gotten has been extreme. My principles haven’t changed, and neither have my politics. But this Faustian bargain of carefully catering to the emotional state of the fringe at the cost of ever accomplishing anything cannot continue. The stakes are too high. If I have to make new friends and new allies, so be it. If I have to never run for office in Massachusetts again, so be it. But I think many people on the left understand this isn’t working and are looking for a new direction.

After Hamas rejected the US-brokered ceasefire/hostage proposal, there are reports that Israel is finalizing plans to enter Rafah, Hamas’s last Gaza stronghold. According to Egyptian sources, this would take place in late April or early May and last between 4-8 weeks. Israel would evacuate the civilian population in Rafah along specific routes and monitor from the ground and air to ensure that no Hamas fighters or Israeli hostages are smuggled out.

@AbbyChavaStein Here's the thing. I haven't heard ANY of you offer some realistic alternative to war to a) end Hamas b) get hostages back. War is fucking terrible. It sucks. Hamas uses them as shields. Cowards hide in hospitals and schools. This is ALL on them!

I used to oppose antisemitism because I think people deserve to be treated with dignity. Now I oppose antisemitism because they are constantly in my mentions and they are dumbest, most loathsome and dishonest people I’ve ever run across. And the bar is not exactly low.
