I'm currently obsessed with Robin Hobb. Quite frankly, I can't understand why her books arent as well known as the other masters of fantasy. While its character driven rather than quest driven, her world is immersive and has come to feel like home. You should read her stuff.

Craig Baird - Canadian History Ehx
When the two-part miniseries Anne of Green Gables debuted on CBC on Dec. 1, 1985, nearly six million Canadians tuned in. It went on to win 10 Geminis, an Emmy and a Peabody. To this day, the miniseries is studied in film schools. This is the story of that miniseries. Anne of Green Gables was first published by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908 and by the 1980s, many adaptions had been produced. In 1984, Kevin Sullivan purchased the rights to Anne of Green Gables and worked with Joe Wiesenfeld to create a screenplay. Both CBC and PBS came on to produce the miniseries. The next step was to cast the role of Anne Shirley. Katharine Hepburn recommended her great-niece Schuyler Grant. Sullivan liked Grant's audition and wanted to give her the role but CBC wanted a Canadian. Grant was given the part of Diana, the best friend of Anne. Over, 3,000 girls audition for the role of Anne Shirley before Megan Follows was chosen. She was born in Toronto and was the daughter of theatre actor and director Ted Follows and actress Dawn Greenhalgh. The rest of the cast was stacked with talented Canadians. Jonathan Crombie got the role of Gilbert Blythe. For his headshot, he simply took a photo of himself at a kiosk at Union Station. His only other acting credit was as an extra in the 1982 film, Class of 1984. Colleen Dewhurst, a two-time Tony and four-time Emmy Award winner played Marilla Cuthbert, while multiple Oscar nominee Richard Farnsworth played Matthew Cuthbert. Stratford Festival veteran Patricia Hamilton played Rachel Lynde. Several actors in the miniseries including Dewhurst went on to act on Road to Avonlea including Jackie Burroughs (Aunt Hetty), Cedric Smith (Alec King) and Mag Ruffman (Olivia King). SCTV alumni Jayne Eastwood was cast as Mrs. Hammond. Costing $3.2 million to film, the miniseries was filmed over ten weeks on Prince Edward Island, and in various communities in Ontario including Stouffville, Jackson's Point and Westfield Heritage Village. When the miniseries aired, it was an unprecedented success. An estimated 5.6 million viewers in Canada, 20% of the Canadian population at the time, watched the miniseries. To this day, it remains the highest rated drama program to ever air on CBC. At the First Gemini Awards in 1986, the miniseries was nominated for 12 Geminis. The miniseries won 10 Geminis including Best Dramatic Mini Series, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for Dewhurst. Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel was released in 1987. Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story was released in 2000. The miniseries was so successful that it was broadcast worldwide. In Japan, it aired in theatres for five years straight. It has also been studied in US film schools as the model for a TV Drama that can appeal to a wide variety of viewers. I hope you enjoyed that look at Anne of Green Gables.
