When you start building an OS with "Open" in your motto be it OSS or just open software development and then go back on your promise you lose the deep developer trust which is the bedrock of your success.
It's sad to see what is happening with Android.

It's truly depressing to see the Android org's leadership repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot. It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. f-droid.org/en/2025/10/28/… Users should be able to choose what software they run on the devices they own.

@seangchau Please look back at what this implies for the wider developer community which is building on AOSP. Without a reference device it's going to be super unfriendly.

We're seeing some speculation that AOSP is being discontinued. To be clear, AOSP is NOT going away. AOSP was built on the foundation of being an open platform for device implementations, SoC vendors, and instruction set architectures.
AOSP needs a reference target that is flexible, configurable, and affordable – independent of any particular hardware, including those from Google. For years, developers have been building Cuttlefish (available on GitHub as the reference device for AOSP) and GSI targets from source. We continue to make those available for testing and development purposes.

I have invested so much in Google devices and Android over the years only to be greeted by this.
Such a loss of developer trust. If you don't want to release the binaries for Pixels then provide a reference developer device like the Nexus!

Finally someone said it. Google Sans / Product Sans looks so consistent on the Pixel. I wish they would let us all use it like Apple does🤞🏼

Google really needs to open up the use of Google Sans at least in Android apps. @kageman pointed me this out to me and now I can't unthink it. Immediately apps like WhatsApp on Android would look modern and less dated.
