The last attempt of Idi Amin Dada to return to Africa. In 1989. This was the last time Amin visited Africa. He is seen here in Zaire on a plane that was to send him back after Mobutu’s government rejected his visit and detained him for one week. Amin’s travels began on New Year’s Day, when he appeared unannounced at the airport in Lagos, Nigeria, on a flight from his home in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Using an assumed name and carrying a Zairean passport, Amin swept through the airport in long, pink-flowered robes. He stayed briefly at the Lagos Sheraton, where he waved enthusiastically at Nigerians who recognized him. Then he continued on to nearby Gabon and his apparent final destination, Zaire. It is not clear what Amin hoped to accomplish in Zaire, where he had family and scattered supporters. The French news agency Agence France-Presse, reporting from Kinshasa, the Zairean capital, quoted "reliable sources" as saying there was "no doubt" Amin was hoping to get back to Uganda via Zaire. The two countries share a long, sparsely populated border. An Air Zaire pilot, however, recognized Amin as he got off the plane in Kinshasa. He was consequently arrested and held for more than a week at a military airport in the capital. He was questioned about his passport, which was discovered to have been part of a batch stolen from a Zairean government office several years back. A Zairean official was quoted in Nairobi newspapers as saying that Amin’s presence was a problem. "We cannot allow him in without endangering our relations with our neighbor Uganda, where Idi Amin is still considered an outcast." Diplomats in Kinshasa were quoted as saying that Amin’s presence was "an embarrassment" to Zairean President Mobutu Sese Seko, who once had close links with him. After being held for one week, Zairean officials put Amin on a Zairean government plane and flew him to Senegal, where he was supposed to board a flight back to Saudi Arabia. That night, however, Saudi officials refused to allow Amin on the plane. The authorities gave no explanation, but one source was quoted as saying he lacked the necessary visas. After being stopped in Senegal by officials Thursday, Amin reportedly reboarded the Zairean jet that brought him there and returned to Zaire before being allowed to enter Saudi Arabia again. In Uganda, news of Amin’s travels sparked mild interest but little fear. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said Amin should be brought back to Uganda to face trial. He added that the Ugandan government was in contact with Zaire, and that it was "high time" his country demanded that Saudi Arabia turn Amin over to Ugandan justice. Political observers in Uganda regarded Amin as a spent political force. He was considered much less threatening to the Museveni government than former president Obote, who was in exile in Zambia. Some claimed Obote’s troops carried out abuses that equaled or exceeded those of Amin’s army. This was not the first time Amin had ventured out of exile. In 1980, a year after invading Tanzanian forces chased him out of Uganda, he reportedly made a brief visit to Zaire. In 1985, apparently thinking the time was right for a return to power, Amin left Saudi Arabia for southern Sudan, announcing that he intended to lead guerrilla forces against then-president Milton Obote. Amin never entered Uganda, however, and when he returned to Saudi Arabia, officials there greeted him coolly and stripped him of his VIP status. Amin had lived with some of his family in the port of Jeddah from the time he was toppled. His expenses were catered for by the Saudi government as an act of Islamic charity to a fellow Muslim. He was known in Jeddah for his habit of sitting down for chats at local teahouses.

🚨Jamie Carragher on Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes slipping away: 🗣️ Carragher: “Arsenal right now look closer to bottling the league than actually winning it. You can feel it happening—it’s a story we’ve seen before, and they’ve put themselves right back in that position.” “When you drop points at crucial moments, you invite Manchester City in—and once they sense it, they don’t let go. City don’t look like a team that will drop points from here. We can even see Manchester City fans now trolling Arsenal with water bottles… it’s embarrassing. That tells you everything about how the momentum has shifted.” “If this title goes down to goal difference, I don’t think it’s even a debate. City will score for fun in these final games—we’ve seen it year after year. Arsenal don’t have that same ruthlessness.” “Unless something dramatic changes, this looks like another title slipping through their fingers.”

If you're a Data Analyst, Risk Analyst, or aspiring FinTech Analyst who wants to move from reporting dashboards to making financial decisions, read this: Dashboards are not enough. Modern financial institutions promote analysts who can: • Quantify credit risk • Detect fraud trade-offs • Model expected loss • Optimise portfolio returns • Allocate capital responsibly Most analysts learn tools. Very few learn capital thinking. So I built the FinTech Capital Intelligence Blueprint to move you from metric reporting to capital decision intelligence. A system with two parts: >> 1. Finance & FinTech Analytics Learning Framework Learn how institutions actually operate: • Financial system mechanics • FinTech unit economics under risk • Governance & regulatory thinking • Capital allocation logic • Executive financial communication >>2. The 12-Week Practical FinTech Analytics Roadmap Build 10 real-world projects: • BNPL unit economics • Payments revenue intelligence • Credit risk modelling • Fraud optimisation • Portfolio stress testing • Capital allocation simulation • LTV & churn economics • AML optimisation • Credit limit strategy • Revenue forecasting This is not decorative analytics. This is institutional-level financial thinking. If you want the roadmap: 1️⃣ Like 2️⃣ Repost 3️⃣ Comment ROADMAP 4️⃣ ‼️Send me a DM, and I’ll share it.

Aihwa Uncle @antomukuwa havanyepe. I was once a temporary teacher of Science at a school in Gokwe Chireya. The only way they knew about experiments was through what the textbooks said. I took it upon myself to go to the Curriculum Development Unit in Harare to order a portable laboratory (which none of the school authorities were aware of). This was mainly because there wasn't really a designated Science teacher at the school. It was only after the lab was delivered that students saw a test tube and Bensen Burner as well as do experiments in real life.

A significant number of employers in Zimbabwe still express a preference for Chartered Accountants (CAs) over other certified accountants for certain roles. This preference often sparks debate, with other certified accounting professionals questioning why some of our job advertisements explicitly state “CAs preferred” rather than being open to all certifications. As recruiters, we take instructions from our clients, and it’s important to clarify that not every finance role we advertise is exclusively for CAs. This ongoing discussion has made me reflect on the broader issue of value versus qualification. While some organizations are legally obligated to hire CAs for specific roles, the preference for CAs raises important questions: 1. Are these hiring decisions driven by measurable differences in skills and value? 2. Or are they influenced by perceptions, tradition, or brand recognition of the CA qualification? It’s also worth exploring how other certifications compare in preparing professionals for strategic, operational, and technical roles in finance. Are there clear distinctions in performance or capability between CAs and professionals with other accounting qualifications? Have you observed roles where non-CA professionals have consistently delivered comparable or even superior value? Let’s have an open, evidence-based discussion about what truly matters in the world of finance and accounting. I welcome your insights and experiences—without denigrating any profession. You are the experts. Let me know your thoughts. @ipcconsultants

Show me evidence that Ncube or Biti were involved in the recalls. They are undoubtedly angry but I have yet to be shown any evidence linking them to what I consider to be illegal recalls. I don’t deal in hearsay, just hard unequivocal facts. So there is no contradiction in my stance.

Yesterday I had a scheduled business meeting with an @FNBSA banking executive. I was 20 minutes late because I got lost in the maze of Johannesburg fancy buildings. When I walked into the boardroom, there were 5 banking officials waiting to see how they could assist me with my banking needs. The banking executive was supported by a team of specialists from the Forex and Wealth Management departments and a Private Advisor who handles high profile media personalities to answer all the questions that I had and assist me open an account. It reminded me why things still work in South Africa, and why millions of Zimbabweans bank in South Africa, including the authors of our economic tragedy. Almost every senior ZANUPF leader banks in South Africa because they don’t trust the Zimbabwean banking system that they preside over. They use the local banking system to loot public funds but they move the money to South Africa and beyond. What amazed me about the @FNBSA team was the fact that they even had done their homework on my background, they even knew how long I had stayed in prison for exposing corruption and practising journalism in Zimbabwe. We all found humour in the historical stories of my work as a journalist, more importantly it showed me how serious and professional they are. The banking executive and his team were well-prepared and attentive to my banking needs because they understood that my banking would bring money that would help the South African economy. Building trust in the banking system is important for any serious economy, especially for individuals who are bringing money not only into your bank, but your country too. Zimbabwean political elites need to learn from their South African counterparts I already bank with two South African banking institutions, but @FNBSA was making a professional statement that they could bank me better by providing a world class service. This type of customer care is nonexistent in Zimbabwe unless if you are a connected elite. I am not super rich, but a huge bank like @FNBSA saw it fit to deploy 5 senior bankers to help me, that is how smart banks get rich, they know that every penny counts. That is why South Africa remains the most sophisticated economy on the continent despite its many problems. Zimbabwe loses millions of dollars to South African banks and the rest of the world every month simply because the political elites have destroyed the once robust Zimbabwean banking system and killed its credibility. Zimbabweans now bank money in mattresses and in safety deposit boxes, but the ZANUPF regime gave notice in its 2024 budget when it announced that it will now raid those safety deposit boxes creating panic and fear in the economy. Zimbabwean elites must understand the importance of trust and customer care in the banking sector regardless of how big or small a client is. It is deeply unfortunate that Zimbabweans don’t trust the banking system in Zimbabwe anymore leading many of them to seek services elsewhere. The loss of trust in the local banking system has significant economic implications for the country and its economy, I hope they realise that too. The tragedy is that the few wine bottles that I will sell around the world will create jobs in South Africa when I bank there instead of Zimbabwe, because it makes no sense for me to bank in Zimbabwe at the moment. To the banking executive and his team that helped me at @FNBSA yesterday, thank you very much for your professionalism, it left a lasting impression on me, and I will definitely recommend your bank to my fellow compatriots. These guys were respectful, authentic, true and honest in their professional conduct. They gave me advice on properties, wealth management, business and investments, and how they are related to my worth based on my current global investments and immediate future pursuits. Next time the drinks are on me, Daddy Hope Sauvignon Blanc to be specific!
