@anthony_schutz For the amount of money we spent on wars in the Middle East. We could have an incredible public transit system and better more affordable electric vehicles powered by a high percentage of renewables.

We don’t need to wait for mass unemployment to justify UBI. We don’t need to wait for AI to be smarter. The justification has existed since the 1970s. Every year we delay is another year the dividend flows upward instead of to all of us. @scottsantens open.substack.com/pub/ieet/p/uni…

I rarely see anyone who owns a business show any interest in class warfare, in fact they don't want it. It seems to come almost exclusively from the envy of people who feel for some reason that those doing better than them owe them something. Besides it's government that's eating everyone's lunch. The collective wealth that all the billionaires in the US have acquired over their entire lives, in some cases over generations wouldn't cover the federal governments spending for a year, and that's if it was actual liquid capital that you could relocate (it isn't). In practice a 100% wealth tax wouldn't make a dent. The rich seem rich if you're poor, but they have nothing compared to the state.

"Let's call it a productivity dividend, because UBI has so much baggage. And if you're talking about how to distribute that productivity dividend, I can start putting it on at very low levels to avoid materially impacting someone's incentive to work." Call it whatever. Just do it.

It's the involuntary nature that makes it theft. If you agree to do something for a price that's voluntary (not theft). In practical terms I'm not sure why some people feel like employers shouldn't be allowed to make any money. If I grow my business to the point where I need to hire help, but then paid them 100% of my profit I would have nothing to live on and the business would go bankrupt the first time there was an unexpected expense. If employees were supplying 100% of what was needed for the business to be profitable they wouldn't need employers they would just run the business themselves.

@Zaug72 @scottsantens It’s not extra money, we simply need to tax the avenues where money flows to the rich and send it to everyone.

@scottsantens I do sincerely want to know where you think all this extra money is going to come from. No matter how you try to redistribute it, the money will always flow in one direction. Any other future is a fantasy.

@scottsantens @ZalinskyS I remember during the Covid lockdowns thinking about how UBI would have smoothed out the economic distributions.

That simply isn't true. It would be if there was some worrisome impact on employment rates, but there isn't. In fact UBI that replaces cash-like welfare programs reduces marginal tax rates and improves the incentive to work. We could do a $500/mo UBI right now with a flat 7% tax. If your income was $80k, that would be $5600 more in taxes for $6000 UBI, thus a net tax reduction of $400 at that income level. That UBI would very likely increase employment rates and reduce spending on crime and healthcare. There's simply no good reason not to do it now.

@_jkgal_ @scottsantens @SenSanders As companies continue to replace humans with machines the tax code needs to change to match the conditions. We should be ramping up the taxes on ai/robotics, ramping down the taxes on labor while introducing UBI.

Jeff Bezos, worth $233 billion, wants to raise $100 billion to replace factory workers with robots. That’s a declaration of war against the working class. He must explain to the American people what happens when millions lose their jobs. How will they survive?

I don’t think people realize how much healthcare costs are driving big companies to fire and not hire. It costs them $30k per family, per year for premiums and care. Most of that goes to the massive, vertically integrated insurance companies that send weekly bills that no one reviews in details. And it doesn’t include the company overhead to deal with it all. It’s usually the 2nd largest expense after payroll. Which is insane It’s far easier to blame AI than it is to blame Healthcare costs. Want to increase jobs, wages and improve affordability for every American ? Break up the biggest insurance companies. Make divest non insurance companies. They don’t need thousands of subsidiaries. That’s how they game and abuse the system and increase costs for all of us. Call your senator and tell them to support the BreakUp Big Medicine Bill by @HawleyMO and @SenWarren.

@jasonc_nc I love UBI, but I think to wean farmers off of the current subsidies we need to replace them with something that seems similar to them. Maybe an agrivoltaics program to get farms to diversify their crops while installing tons of solar power.

Someone do the math to just make UBI payments to corn farmers not to grow it. It would be a far more efficient welfare program than this, without the socialized environmental costs being added.
Congressman Brad Finstad@RepFinstad

Year-round E15 is a no-brainer to us in southern Minnesota. It’s a commonsense solution that will strengthen demand and open markets for our corn farmers, support rural economies, and provide families with affordable options at the pump. I had a great meeting with @mncorn this week to talk about the importance of getting year-round, nationwide E15 across the finish line for producers and consumers.

Andrew Yang is right. Taxing AI companies will be a cornerstone of a post-labor economy. But we should go further. AI was trained on our data, our writing, our code, our images. Society created the raw material. So society should own a piece of it. Not just taxes. Shared ownership and AI dividends. If AI becomes the most productive technology in history, the wealth it creates should flow back to the people who helped create it.
