@RedWavePress Why attempt to improve the New York Jets when there are global climate issues that need to be addressed! Same ridiculous logic as Maher’s statement.
Bill Maher on Artemis II: “I don’t mean to be the wet blanket on the moon, but I just don’t get it. Everybody’s like, if we’re on the moon, we can get to Mars. I don’t want to go there either. There’s nothing out there except other rocks. Let’s fix the sh*tshow here on Earth.”
Interesting tidbit at the end of Tuesday’s BBTN pod: that someone in the know told Buster that Oakland could well emerge as a serious expansion city once the dust settles in Vegas, Tampa, and with the CBA.
This is looking west on Old Wagon Rd., Big Bend, Placer County, CA. It's the same road as in the last couple of posts, but a few hundred yards east. I love this spot because it marks the convergence of three historic roads across the Sierra. We discussed how the Lincoln Highway (1913-1927) used this path, and, before it, the Dutch Flat-Donner Lake Wagon Road (DFDLWR). Now the Pioneer Trail enters the scene, with its route heading up that hill behind our bikes, the same route used by the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party, 1844. The hill the pioneers is very steep, and it always amazes that they did it with wagons in tow.
@sirvegetable Who said shoot out? Not me. Play full strength until it’s settled. No gimmicks, no adjustments, no regular season NHL OT (let’s get everyone home now) nonsense. Real hockey.
This is a short video of Monica and me trying to follow the old Donner Trail (1846) at Alder Creek. We find it great fun to spot these markers and try to stay on the trail. There is no path, as most people just don't do this kind of thing. You have to spot the markers. This spot today is likely covered with 5' of snow!
All the land shown in the post is Forest Service land, and they don't allow unauthorized metal detecting. Likely a big fine! Now, the OCTA (Oregon California Trails Association) permits metal detecting under Forest Service supervision. They are always looking for volunteers! Reminds me, I should re-join that group.
@pitsenberger Ah makes sense, would be interesting to know how he went about his discovery process. Also makes me want to take a metal detector out to some of these areas and see what might be found 🙂
Weddell started in the1920s looking for and marking these old trails. Notice how much the landscape has changed from then to now. He could have seen things we can't today. These days would be hard, but back then, you might still find artifacts, as these trails were kind of forgotten. Oxen shoes, square nails, wagon parts, etc.
The actual trail across Donner Summit! It's a notch between two rock walls. Today, it's a quiet path that many people don't know about, as the more popular Pacific Crest Trail, which connects to it, draws most people's attention. Amazingly, this path was once the route of the Lincoln Highway, the first coast-to-coast highway in America. This path is the trail the Stephens party would have traversed.
