I’d love for a streaming platform to run this as an experiment. A high budget movie, imax format, give home viewers a very clear option to toggle between cinema aspect ratio and “full screen” (using some imax verticality) and track the metrics. Feels like now is the time for that sort of approach

In cases like this it surely is planned for though, if shooting in imax format (I’m talking adding that extra vertical height, not pan and scan, *if* a movie has that imax data) People are far more likely to watch movies at home now, so why not accommodate that? Cinema aspect ratio only exists because of the physical dimensions of cinema screens. All I’m saying is it makes far more sense now (vs eg 10 years ago) to give people that option “Black bars” should be a preference.

I maybe be stupid…. But I never understood why we don’t use the fullscreen for film on widescreen TVs. The black bars made sense when it was widescreen on a 4:3 screen. Why is all that space unused for home releases? Minus the few 4Ks that include imax switching.

@theo The only - and I mean only - way to effectively use models of any class is constant hand-holding and supervision Non-stop manual iteration on tasks and outcomes And that’s not changing any time soon. It’s baked into the structure of these things.

Just let Opus go for over an hour on a new feature. When it was done, I asked how I can test it. 20 minutes later, it realized I can't test it because it did the whole thing entirely wrong. Idk how you guys use this model every day for real work 🙃

But the data is there, right? We could have that option. I understand that the director has a specific ultimate vision for how a film should be experienced but so do consumers I could watch Avatar on my phone. It would likely annoy James Cameron but what’s he gonna do about it (please don’t tell him this he’ll burn my phone) Same with watching on a TV. If I want to fill the boundaries of my screen with content then that should be fine Cinema aspect ratio is exactly that, for cinemas. And especially with IMAX, we can gain thy vertical height without losing context I just think it’s an old fashioned limitation BUT I also see how it’s used to good effect eg see Oppenheimer and the aspect ratio shifts

@Jawmuncher Because movies are framed that way? Movies are, or at least used to be, carefully shot, every shot composited with care both with the top/bottom and left/right sides. And movie 2.35 is the best format for film despite IMAX trying to gaslight people into going back to 4:3

@DomainDead If this whole game is a boiling pot of “last x years of [every genre]” then I’m all for it I’m kinda exhausted with the range of games available now If this is one game I can just fire up and be stupid in for an hour, in whatever way I choose, sign me up.

As if all that’s stopping developers using AI is their salary? I don’t think he’s all there any more. I don’t think any billionaire is tbh. I think the breakdown of the “only grifters can truly succeed” rule is breaking their minds a little. If all AI does is demolish the mega-billionaire class then I’m all for it
