Teacher accused of sexually abusing and murdering baby boy he was adopting threatens to “fight till the day I die” when confronted by police Jamie Varley, 37, a former textiles teacher, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, had 13-month-old Preston Davey placed with them for adoption in April 2023. Preston died on 27 July 2023 after being rushed to hospital in cardiac arrest. A post-mortem found more than 40 separate injuries, including serious internal damage consistent with sexual assault and signs of smothering. In a police interview played in court, when an officer told Varley the pathologist concluded Preston had been sexually abused and smothered, he pointed at her and said: “You make that suggestion, and I’ll fight you till the day I die.” Varley denies murder, sexual assault and multiple counts of child cruelty. McGowan-Fazakerley denies causing or allowing the death and child cruelty. The trial continues at Preston Crown Court. Thoughts?

@GriftReport I had a counselling session yesterday for infertility. My partner and I plan to adopt. Guess what the counsellor said? It’s extremely unlikely I will be able to adopt a new born / baby under 1. I’m now reading a post about the authorities allowing a 13 month old to be raped

@chrisgambler247 @andymay_76 It is unequivocally a good thing. Just because a problem gambler got money from another source doesn’t mean blocking them from using a credit card wasn’t a positive step. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

The UK evaluation of the credit card ban (introduced in 2020) found it reduced credit card use and added friction, but effects were strongest for lower-risk gamblers. Those experiencing moderate or high gambling harm often substituted to other funding sources. natcen.ac.uk/publications/e…

@adamlevitan This is how it's been in the UK for years and it's objectively a positive change-- and the data unequivocally supports it.

I know the data is mixed here, in terms of combating problem gambling. But putting at least some friction around people betting with money they don't have (credit cards) has to be a good thing. Other regulations that seem like no-brainers: 1. Limit frequency of sportsbook advertisements on TV 2. Regulate content of ads: No more "come win huge at our book!!!"... when we all know winners aren't welcome 3. VIP host dos/don'ts
