The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle - A book summary. It states that talent requires three elements: deep practice, ignition, and master coaching. The central theme of the book would be the concept that talent comes down to practice and not innate traits or genetics. 1/7

I’ve spent years arguing that padwork is overrated. So naturally, I found myself in Tokyo, paying top dollar for a private session with the most expensive padman I could find. sonnybrown.net/why-everyone-l…

I played a lot of sports growing up. None of them emphasized static drilling nearly as much as we do in Jiu-Jitsu. In wrestling, you’d even have to do push-ups for being a “dead fish” (a bad partner who provided no accurate resistance). The idea that hours upon hours of static drilling is the secret to skills that translate into live situations is some 1980s Karate Kid BS. You don’t need to wax on, wax off. You need to train with resistance - at scale.

Imagine facing an unknown Genki Sudo at a local comp. It wasn’t a major event or a stacked bracket. It was a casual tournament at Chris Brennan’s gym with pizza and drinks for competitors. What followed became one of the most influential grappling clips of the early internet era.

Judo solved this problem decades ago. Masahiko Kimura uses a simple lapel grip to shut down frames and pass cleanly. Colourised and remastered from an instructional where Kimura was in his 60’s.

This is how octopus half guard creates stand-ups under pressure. Half guard defenders usually kill the near-side underhook, which often leaves the far-side underhook available. Swim your near-side arm across, build octopus half, then choose back take or stand-up. Part 3/5.

Want a back take that opens up off strikes from closed guard? The octopus guard can turn defence into a back take. Swim under strikes, pressure the back of the head, keep your head higher, then post and hoist your hips to come around. This is Part 2/5 of the series.

Octopus guard and half octopus are unorthodox, but they solve a real MMA problem: staying safe from strikes while building height for sweeps and stand-ups. Part 1 breaks down the core mechanics and why striking often gives you the entry. (1/5)

The Cradle System for MMA & BJJ. My new breakdown video is out, looking at the cradle in all its forms and how it can be used to takedown, breakdown, pass guard and submit. I think it's especially useful against the fence in MMA. Check it out here: youtu.be/j7lV6A5q-E8

In Brazil, 1977, a 13-year-old Carlos Gracie Jr stepped in as part of a 5 v 5 challenge where the Gracies tested their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against a national Karate team. Size and strikes weren’t enough once it hit the ground. 📹 Footage has been colourised and remastered.
