If California wants to become affordable, it needs to copy-paste tens of thousands of exactly this type of apartment building: 6 stories with ground-floor parking; 2 units per floor (either two 2-beds + den or one 1-bed and one 3-bed); single stair and elevator; 7,000 sq ft lot.

@skyeluque @UziCryptoo But you pay no state income tax in Florida. In NYC, you could be paying up to 14.78% in state and local taxes. Plus a higher sales tax of 8.875% (vs 6-7.5% in FL).

@UziCryptoo South Florida is just as bad. Mine has been between 29-37k for the past 5 years. Built in 1955. Remodeled. 2500 sf. .30 acres. The DeSantis proposal has a carve out for schools so 60% will remain. A 40% haircut is better than nothing.

My dad sold the house I grew up in back in 1999. It's 60 years old, 2,500 SF, on a third of an acre on Long Island NY. If he owned it today the property taxes would be about $2,600. Not bad right? The problem is that's per month not per year. Yup, 33K a year in property taxes! Property taxes should be illegal.

"I bet your little Asian, fish head, wife doesn't have these cannons" JPMorgan LevFin executive director Lorna Hajdini, quoted in an anonymous lawsuit by a junior male colleague accusing her of making him her sex slave Viagra, roofies, and balls not "tasting like curry" are some other astonishing highlights of the lawsuit that accuses Hajdini of rape, stalking, and abuse

I would assume this is Lyon and not Paris. That’s Poularde de Bresse en vessie. Extremely high quality chicken steamed in a pig’s bladder with truffles and foie gras. This was made famous by Paul Bocuse and is amazing. $400 or so for a serving for 2-4 people, for those who are asking in the comments.

@NYCMayor Eggs are $2.25 per dozen and a loaf of bread is $4.50 on Amazon Fresh--delivered to your apartment door. Meanwhile, the median rent in Manhattan is near $5,000. Why would you spend an ounce of energy on grocery prices rather than housing?

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
At our city-owned grocery stores, staples like eggs and bread will actually be affordable. And we're going to do it the right way, without cutting workers' pay or dignity. Because in the wealthiest city in this country, buying groceries shouldn't be an unsolvable equation. It should be simple, fair, and within reach for everyone.

@NYCMayor Production is declining in places like LA and NYC because the taxes are very unfavorable compared to Georgia or foreign locations. Idiotic labor laws (including your proposed $30 minimum wage) also hurt. Serious question: did you ever take an economics class in college ?

This merger is bad for New Yorkers three times over. Thousands of jobs at risk here in the city. Streaming bills going up as competition disappears. And two of America’s most powerful media companies under one roof, deciding what you watch and what you hear. Today, as Warner Bros. and Paramount shareholders vote, New York City is on record: this merger should be stopped.
David Dayen@ddayen

Hollywood has organized around blocking the Paramount-Warner Brothers merger. @HaroldMeyerson writes that putting a film treasure up for sale was unwarranted and reveals the eclipse of enterprise capitalism by shareholder capitalism. prospect.org/2026/04/20/dea…

@NYCMayor These should be reserved for people with cars registered in the same school district or precinct as the parking space. People who pay NYC City tax should get the benefit of these spots before people who live in Westchester, etc. If Baltimore and Hoboken can do this, NYC can too.

If you are part of the 90% of Americans that has health insurance, you pay some money as an insurance deductible, but likely no more than $5,000-10,000 (your "out of pocket maximum"). If you don't have health insurance, the hospital will drastically write the bill down and ultimately settle for pennies on the dollar. But there will be a lot of stress and it can mess up your credit in some states. (Recently, many states have started preventing hospitals, ambulance companies, etc. from reporting medical debt to credit reporting agencies.)

We need healthcare reform in America immediately American has a baby that needed to spend 25 days in the cardiac ICU and have open heart surgery She just got the bill and after insurance her portion is $539,477 They are recommending payments of $22,479 per month She shows the bill as proof I looked into historical hospital pricing and for this exact same situation, a baby spending 25 days in the ICU and having to have open heart surgery in the 1980’s would have cost around $50,000 That’s a 10x price increase even AFTER insurance pay their portion We are being robbed blind

This is what a broken healthcare system & rigged tax code looks like: Last year, CVS paid $0 in federal income taxes, raised premiums by nearly 20%, cut over 1,800 jobs, gave its CEO $21 million & made $6.57 billion in profit. Yes. We must tax the rich & enact Medicare for All.

I know this may be hard for your to understand because you are both stupid and a socialist, but what IF they optimized their investments and deductions to pay as little taxes as possible while maximizing investments in their business? Notice how this post doesn’t accuse any of these companies of breaking the law.

What's "common sense" about this? Why do they need to raise taxes at all? A $117B city budget is WILD and they are clearly poor stewards of public funds. Remember when DeBlasio's wife spent $900MM on homelessness and no one could figure out where the money actually went? Or look at Mamdani's plan to spend $30MM over three years to build a single city-owned grocery store. I've yet to hear an argument for this tax other than "rich people have money so let's take it!" But why should they pay more when they consume few services and already pay transfer taxes, mortgage recording taxes, property taxes, etc. Mamdani clearly wanted to do a wealth tax, but was too chickenshit to do that because he and Hochul know that would cause an exodus out of NYC/NYS.

What exactly is the argument against a pied-a-terre tax for second (or third / fourth / fifth) homes worth more than $5 million owned by people who do not even live in the city? It just seems like such a glaringly obvious common-sense policy.
