My dad sold the house I grew up in back in 1999. It's 60 years old, 2,500 SF, on a third of an acre on Long Island NY. If he owned it today the property taxes would be about $2,600. Not bad right? The problem is that's per month not per year. Yup, 33K a year in property taxes! Property taxes should be illegal.

@Spudlink1 @UziCryptoo Enrollment in most Long Island school districts peaked around 2005 and has been going down significantly for the past 20 years. Administration has still expanded and the pensions are forever.

This is why I’ve never understood the desire for “realistic” superhero stories. A world with actual godlike metahumans wouldn’t just look like ours with capes, it would be completely unrecognizable. For instance, gold would be effectively worthless in a universe where someone can literally poop it out.

Throughout history people migrated from regions with less opportunity to regions of more opportunity. This isn’t something new, it’s been going on for centuries. It’s happened in the Roman Empire, it happened to Indus Valley civilization where Europeans would migrate towards what’s known as Pakistan/North India today, in hope for a better life. Fact of the matter is Canada is a pro immigration civilization and everyone living here has migrated here from somewhere else on the planet. It didn’t have a big native population. To say that the newcomers aren’t welcome but the old immigrants are, is absolutely unjust. However I do agree that today we have a problem of unchecked immigration, where we don’t veto the people who come to assimilate. In the Charter of rights of freedom we have free expression and practice of our religion. Saying go back to your own country would be valid if you would also acknowledge that your ancestors immigrated here and the same should apply to you, and if you’re not willing to entertain that concept then don’t expect any of us to take that seriously.

@WallStreetApes In the last 30 to 40 years, manufacturer's been working to make appliance more energy efficient, lower manufacturing costs by using cheaper quality materials, shifting manufacturing to overseas for cheap labor. The result is appliances that die in a few years.
