@CovenElf Try going over that area with the eraser. If that fixes it, we can make the alpha cut less strict in a future update.

@sparseal thank you so much for your reply 🙏 it did solve most of the issue, but my face is still looking a little weird with see-through eyes and eyebrows 🥺

Wafer 1.1 introduces support for transparent objects, filtered textures, and .fbx and .vrm imports, along with a smudge tool, brush jitter, painting on non-manifold geometry, and many smaller improvements and fixes. Available now.

@CovenElf Open the scene inspector -> texture sets and switch the textures to transparent. You can set all textures to transparent automatically when importing the model on the initial setup dialog.

@ravnfrost @pablodp606 Try using float colors in the color domain format if you are working with soft gradients.

@sparseal Hello, I'm having an issue where layering darker colors (for shading) generates blue-ish, pink-ish and yellow-ish tones, like oil painting. I'm using hard brush with default settings, is there any way to fix this? @pablodp606

Next Wafer update (1.1) will add support for loading .vrm files and painting in scenes with multiple transparent objects and filtered textures.

@ZachMakesAvis Setup the metalness and roughness domains (or use the PBR preset after creating a new document), add a fill layer, the value each domain uses is visible in the layers inspector (you can change it from disabled/constant/canvas)

@ZachMakesAvis Yes, metallic and roughness will be visible in the PBR preview, emissive can be edited as a custom domain but won't preview as emissive.

@sparseal May I know if there is a flat color or shadeless view in Wafer? It would help greatly with painting anime style models!

@sparseal are you able to incorporate a self dedicated lasso tool? I think it'd be awesome

@DreamiePaws Make sure the model has a material assigned per texture and try using glb instead of obj. You can also import each mesh individually. We'll try to improve how the obj importer builds the scene in the next update.

@Floreum Internally, it handles the equivalent pixel count to that number of UDIM tiles as a single large texture. If there is interest in this feature to use in professional workflows, exporting/importing UDIMs by splitting a large texture can be considered.

@sparseal When you say tiles, does that mean it supports UDIMs?

24K texture painting (36 × 4K tiles) on a 2018 iPad Pro (3rd gen), with full per-pixel control and responsive blending. Wafer has no texture resolution limits. It captures extremely fine details from stencils and alphas while running smoothly on older hardware.

16K texture painting on a 2015 1st Gen 9.7-inch iPad Pro, the least powerful iPad with Apple Pencil support. Wafer’s tool performance is barely affected by texture resolution or layer count. It is also optimized to run efficiently on low-memory devices.

@SteveTalkowski Only textures. We would like to see more usages in professional pipelines before deciding implementing advanced scene formats.

@sparseal Congrats! I tried it out last night. Question about export options before I plunk down the $20: Is it just textures for now? It would be amazing if I could export a working .usdz file with maps hooked up compliantly, like Substance Painter does.

@_sstrikerr_ Yes, it also works with small textures and it has a tool for painting individual pixels.

@sparseal very cool! how does this work with low poly models with small textures? I know you said it doesn't limit texture sizes but if I want the constraint so I don't overpaint details that wont show for like a 256X256 what would you do?

Wafer is our first product built entirely on our own cross-platform UI toolkit, application framework, renderer, and geometry processing libraries. The entire stack is written in Rust and WGPU. We plan to continue building on this foundation for future updates and products.

@starryyberries Copy the texture to the Wafer documents folder with the files app (so the app can read it), then open the contextual menu of a layer -> import image -> color -> select the texture
