Encouraging to see colleagues standing up for the excellent Hollie Ridley
Aubrey Allegretti@breeallegretti

Exc: Labour war erupts over our story - with female Labour MPs attacking "misogyny" and "scapegoating" of Hollie Ridley, the party's general secretary. Lucy Powell, Labour's deputy leader, wrote in the Women's PLP WhatsApp group today in response to our story: "It's unacceptable to brief against colleagues at all, but to brief against staff who have no public platform to defend themselves is particularly bad". She adds: "I had hoped we were moving past this kind of behaviour." Stronger words from Siobhain McDonagh: "Hollie is doing a tough job in difficult circumstances. If we lose badly in May it is certainly not her fault. It's ours. I have been here before when ambitious politicians decide that the female General Secretary is fair game. It doesn't end well for anyone. If any[one] wants to leak this post please make sure you spell my name correctly! Siobhain McDonagh." Alex Davies-Jones, a minister, adds: "It's made me very angry... I thought we'd addressed the issue of briefing against women. It's disheartening and reeks of misogyny." Anna Turley, the Labour chair, writes: "Horrified by the piece. Hollie is one of the most impressive people I've ever worked with... She also organised an incredible campaign at G&D [Gorton and Denton] - it broke records for the mobilisation - and any shortcomings are not hers." Allison Gardner asks: "Are they setting her up to be the scapegoat" To which Ashley Dalton responds: "This has been on the cards for months. Fuming." Emily Darlington adds: "Funny that this is the only MP WhatsApp group that is upset at this..." Amanda Martin says: "Totally outrageous once again [to] try to lay blame at feet of a cracking woman." x.com/Geri_E_L_Scott…

All the polling shows that the immigration changes the Government is proposing are popular with voters, including even those voting Green. Multiple factors are driving our weak poll numbers, esp cost of living. Being "too tough" on immigration isn't one of them, and being serious about controlling immigration is critical to holding "Red Wall" seats vs Reform.

“The very survival of the Labour Party is at stake," Angela Rayner warned in a major intervention on Tuesday night The former deputy prime minister told soft left Labour group Mainstream that the party was "running out of time" She also criticised "un-British" immigration reforms, saying they'd “pull the rug” from migrants already in the UK, reports @siennamarla politicshome.com/news/article/a…

Very good news that the government has accepted the Fingleton Review on nuclear power in full to speed up building, reduce costs and advance energy sovereignty. It’s the exact repudiation of Clegg’s 2010 declaration that nuclear is “not even an answer”.

There's been a lot of scaremongering about landlords selling up en masse. But houses don't disappear if sold - many renters will jump at the chance to become home owners. Good to see this point made in the @UKHouseofLords on Wednesday by Lord @spellar.

Labour suffered its worst election result since 1935 in 2019. Overseen by the same Corbynite MP's who constantly agigtate for Starmers removal. In July 2024, the Labour Party, led by Starmer, won a landslide victory. The current vociferous old Corbynite gang have learnt nothing.

Never forget that the "journalists" rooting for a Labour meltdown are a) not party members and b) stand to make a lot of grift money from the resulting circus c) have enough money to leave the country if the fash take power

@DEHEdgerton Those 2 things can both be true. Vote share was higher than the GEs you cite, but was heavily piled up in massive majorities in constituencies in big cities and university towns, and dipped badly in Red Wall post-industrial areas, hence loss of so many of them.

No offence to some good PLP colleagues who are involved, but as someone in a front line Reform facing seat, I didn't have "reestablish the Tribune group of soft left MPs" on my list of useful ways to tackle Farage et al theguardian.com/politics/2025/…
