When you study bodybuilding, each era has its own distinct look. In the ’70s, what really stands out is the chest development. Arnold, Lou Ferrigno, Serge Nubret, Franco Columbu, just to name a few, had some of the best pecs ever seen… They didn’t have those massive, capped shoulders, huge wheels, or Dorian Yates–type backs. But the chest, along with great arms and midsections… that’s what defined that era. Their training? Mostly free weights: flat and incline bench, dips, dumbbell flyes, and a few cable crossovers to squeeze in that last bit of blood. A lot of volume, tons of sets, all sorts of reps, high frequency. Just the basics, repeated over and over.
