On the day Miles Davis would have turned 100, Sonny Rollins, the legendary tenor saxophonist and one of the last icons of the golden age of post-World War II jazz, died at age 95. He played and recorded with the likes of Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane among many others. It’ll be funny watching Hollywood (potentially) act aghast at Obession, Backrooms, and Amazing Digital Circus, and then (presumably) react by greenlighting Star Trek Into Redundancy, The Bourne Irrelevancy, Urban Legends: Legends and Pirates of the Caribbean: In Empty Theaters.

OBSESSION is exactly the kind of successful film release that studios always claim will keep them from rushing a title to streaming platforms while it’s still playing well in movie theatres. That the film’s producer, @jason_blum, isn’t sure of @FocusFeatures plans is somewhat telling of why cinema operators don’t take the studios at their word.

Lisa Bunnell, head of distribution @FocusFeatures says OBSESSION “…has been outperforming any comps… it’s gone way beyond expectations.” Meanwhile @jason_blum doesn’t know how long OBSESSION will play in theaters before landing on digital platforms, but told @Variety it’s a “big topic of conversation at the moment” adding that he’s a “big believer in a long, consistent theatrical window.” variety.com/2026/film/box-…

Focus Features and Blumhouse’s breakout sleeper smash 'Obsession’ earned $22.2M in weekend two for a $55M 10-day total, grossing 30% more in its second weekend than it did in its first ($17.2M). That’s one of the best jumps for any wide release not opening around Christmas. 1/2

@sperling @Carlos_Film I’m not trying to make excuses but the oldest DACA recipients are probably in their mid 30s. If you are of a certain age or income level it’s very plausible that you’ve never met a DACA recipient and therefore are clueless about the program

It’s always so strange sitting at a dinner with film industry people where inevitably they talk about the vacations they’ve taken, the international festivals they love, and how much they like Mexico City. And then I have to either stay quiet or explain to them what DACA is 🫠

Obsession was very well done. The 2 leads are gonna be big stars. Or should be. Some OTN writing but prod design, lighting, music - all added to the tension. Good scares, clear theme. Other than cell phones, coulda been set in 1995. But the audience stayed talking bout it after & thats what u want!

@BilgeEbiri The 2016 Cannes Film Festival was stacked with great films – AQUARIUS, ELLE, GRADUATION and TONI ERDMANN to name just a few. This year THE HANDMAIDEN would have been a serious contender for the Palme. The CST did award it the Vulcain Prize, which few people ever care about.

Yes, ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ might indeed clear $100 million over the holiday weekend, but the real news is ‘Obsession,’ the Focus Features and Blumhouse “yandere-ish”* chiller that’s becoming a word-of-mouth sensation. (* My 19-year-old explained that term to me.)
