This framing is incomplete and could lead people in the wrong direction. Matching your Form 8949 proceeds to your 1099-DA is one automated check. But treating it as "the only test" misses three things: 1. 1099-DAs only cover trades that happened on an exchange. If you hold crypto off-platform, used DeFi, bridged assets, or sold on another exchange, none of that activity appears on the form. Matching the 1099-DA you received doesn't mean your filing is complete. It means the part the IRS can see matches. 2. The cost basis side matters more. The 1099-DA reports what you sold for. It doesn't report what you paid. If your 8949 shows proceeds that match the 1099-DA but your cost basis is wrong or fabricated, you pass the automated match and fail the audit. This is what brings penalties or worse. 3. The IRS doesn't only audit mismatches. They audit incomplete filings, inconsistent cost basis, missing income, and simply random people. A matched form with bad data underneath it isn't compliance. It's a liability.

The IRS doesn't care if your software is "better" at tracking transactions. They care if your Form 8949 matches the 1099-DA they received from the exchange. That's the only test. Before filing, your software should generate a report: "Form 8949 proceeds: $X. Total 1099-DA proceeds: $X. Difference: $0." If it can't produce this report, you're flying blind.
