.@catehall ’s Do Less is my favorite piece of writing in 2026 so far my biggest takeaways: 1) all the information in the world is useless without action 2) if your rest time is goal-oriented, you’re fucked 3) feed your elephant 🐘

🚨 NEW: The Government is set to announce the "biggest animal welfare reforms" in a generation - Ban puppy farming by reforming dog breeding rules - Ban electric shock collars on pets pending a consultation - Ban trail hunting amid concerns it is being used as a smokescreen for illegal fox hunting - Introduce humane slaughter rules for farmed fish to prevent avoidable pain during killing - Phase out colony cages for laying hens, which restrict movement and natural behaviours like nesting and perching, and pig farrowing crates, which confine mother pigs and stop them turning around after giving birth - Ban snare traps that can catch pets and cause suffering for animals - Reform the use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs after evidence it causes distress and suffering - Ban shooting hares during the breeding season (roughly from February to September) so young hares are not left without mothers

@PatrickAllies "Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a Virgin's womb..." - with "womb" of course pedantically sung in a full rhyme with "come".

@ChanaMessinger I heard that many (those with a low understanding of tech) already thought of computers as intelligent before we got LLMs — their experience was already one of interacting w/ a magic oracle. Don’t know how much xp with pre-LLM computers she has, so she can make the comparison.

@Noahpinion what the fuck noah, going from 'woman' to 'person' is just gender-neutral language! why should this law not apply to trans men who get pregnant? there's no need for us to go out of our way to help exclude trans people from healthcare

There is a quote that goes something like this, but I've lost it. Anyone know of it. "but secretly, I am rooting for the orangutan" Maybe by Edgar Allan Poe ??

@ilex_ulmus It sounds like you've already made your mind up, but I could ask my friend who works on evals for the UK AI safety institute if you're interested - NB they are a thoughtful person

Also, perhaps I have just missed this conversation, but where is the crisis and the soul-searching and the number-crunching on whether evals are the right intervention? Feels like you don’t care and treat it as axiomatic that knowing more descriptive stats is always worth it.

I've gotten so boring in the last couple years that if I were to write a new EA lifestyles post it would either be "taking the government to court over charitable donations" or "high impact will writing"

@ohabryka @willmacaskill @benchanceyy @AaronBergman18 This is a pointlessly high bar to meet, since I think the number of people who care about others *to the degree they care about themselves or greater* is small enough that it reduces the referent of the word ‘care’ to the point it bears ~no relation to how that word is used.

This is IMO clearly true for most people who profess caring about charity. It’s also a common relationship dynamic (cf. tropes about people performing being in love, or being in love with an idealized version of their partner). But again, a word like “caring” is clearly very fuzzy, and it’s common for someone to “care” about something in one way, and not another. Also, the line between really believing something and performing a belief is fuzzy, and so it’s also hard to be precise here.

@Malcolm_Ocean well, can you articulate why it matters? it's not obvious to me that it's in the top 50 things to select for.

this is allowed to matter when I feel the negative space into which I speak this obvious truth—one that feels socially safer to say now than it did a few days ago, but still edgy—I anticipate people believing that stating this obvious fact somehow makes me cruel. so let me be clear: I'm not saying fitness matters for dignity. but it is sensible to appoint someone healthy to handle matters of health. obviously. and it requires rationalization to not be able to acknowledge that this is obviously true. it's not the only thing that matters, but it matters. (I looked up other pics of her and this is representative—and the first google image result, actually—not a deliberately bad photo. the original had her in B&W and I fixed that to make a fairer comparison.)
