Capt Bhardwaj went a little further than he should have, but it's silly at worst. There's really no need to make a mountain out of a molehill. The young Captain had just earned his wings as a combat helicopter pilot after rigorous training. In a burst of emotion after the Passing Out Parade, he proposed to his girlfriend. It happened in uniform, with a helicopter in the backdrop and family/colleagues cheering. Romantic and human- Absolutely. But also- inappropriate in terms of protocol and discipline. The Army quite rightly is displeased. However, this will likely end with an interview with the boss without the chair and the tea. He would be given a rap on the knuckles- and that should be it. Remember- we are willing to send our young into the harm’s way without hesitation- in return, we should be willing to accommodate a bit of antics. Discipline is the spine of the Army, while the human spirit is its soul. When troops storm the gates of hell- they are not driven by the discipline rather the spirit. A dash of personality doesn’t weaken the force- it keeps it alive. I am not sure about the Army, but in the Air Force young officers have gotten away with much worse. Capt Bhardwaj will almost certainly take the rap on the knuckles, in the right spirits, learn the lesson, and go on to fly with distinction. Let’s not overdo the outrage- our Army can handle a romantic moment. Jai Hind.

Army Officer Captain Bharat Bhardwaj allegedly violated military decorum and protocol by proposing to his fiancee in uniform during a Passing Out Parade-like ceremony in front of military equipment. The Army expressed displeasure, calling the act inappropriate in timing, place, and tradition: Army Sources

@aamliNSS He crossed over inadvertently. He was in a RR unit on the LoC. Had problems in adjusting to d situation there. Of course, d unit ethos failed to settle him down. But he hd no connection to the surgical strks. It was just a coincidence that he went across on d day of strks.

"Modi has not done a single press conference in 12 years." So what? Not taking questions from the press is not some moral crime in itself. The media is not a council of high priests conducting a legitimacy exam that every Prime Minister must clear for democratic certification. In a democracy, legitimacy comes from public mandate and governance, not from standing before cameras to satisfy a section of the media that mistakes access for accountability. As such, today's media ecosystem is not some sacred, neutral institution operating above politics. Much of it is deeply polarized. Different political camps have their favorite journalists, narratives, and ecosystems. Questions are designed less to seek answers and more to manufacture headlines, extract viral moments, or build personal brands. And those who hold frequent press conferences are not automatically standing on higher moral ground either. We have all seen planted easy questions from pliable journalists and difficult questions brushed aside with “aap rival party ki bhasha mat boliye,” deflections, or outright evasions. The number of press conferences a leader does is not a certificate of transparency. Otherwise, by that logic, Trump, who interacts with the press almost daily, should automatically be considered the most transparent, most democratic, and the finest leader in the world.

The surge of relief and elation among Bengalis following Mamata’s ouster mirrors the scenes that unfold after an Arab dictator is toppled, and reveals just how bankrupt our democratic institutions have become, allowing dictators to thrive under the cover of democracy. My views:

Polarising, consolidating and banking on Muslim votes is victory of democracy, secularism in action, pluralism; consolidating Hindu vote in reaction is fascism, death of democracy, blow to secularism.

While undoubtedly ambitious, the Great Nicobar Project is detached from economic and logistical realities. The inflated strategic rationale does not obscure the fact that the venture is commercially, environmentally, and logistically questionable.

Why is Western coverage of India the way it is? Some of it is editorial bias. More of it is the fact that outrage about India sells in India. But the biggest layer, the one Delhi still doesn't fight on, is something older and harder. It is information warfare. 🧵

Prof Shashank Ranjan In @htTweets, @sranjan46809 cuts through the romance of ‘precision warfare’ to expose a harder truth: distance may reduce risk for soldiers, but it often redistributes it onto civilians. As technology sanitizes combat, accountability thins.
