A shift to AI-generated search results will decrease the traffic that Google sends to publishers' sites, as more people get what they need straight from the Google search page instead. niemanlab.org/2023/05/google…

A major shake-up is coming to Google's search results. Google is bringing generative AI to Search with a host of new features – both exciting and worthy of concern. One screenshot from the event that caught my eye was an example shown for the query "plants for a dark dorm room". Currently, Google will show a featured snippet for a website at the top, with 10-blue-links below. But that's about to change for *some* queries. Based on my understanding, the use of generative AI in Search is primarily for queries categorised as NORA (No One Right Answer). This is an acronym you should remember. For this search term, I would expect that the answer would vary. This means Google could be giving too much weighting to the featured snippet, which may leave out important results. In comes generative AI. There are 6 changes highlighted in the image to be aware of. Ranging from most to least important, here's what each of the changes involve: 1. Featured Snippet Removal This is the most significant and jarring change of the lot. Not having a featured snippet means that the top article no longer gets the visibility it once received. Instead, the AI generates its own list with descriptions and imagery. 2. Top 3 Links On desktop, the top 3 articles are presented in the righthand column. This could be a combination of the previous featured snippet and the top 2 10-blue-link pages. 3. 'Coverse' Tab When exposed to the experimental generative AI (you'll need to join the waitlist - thoughtful.sandbox.google.com/about?location… - use a VPN for the US if not located there), the 'All' tab will be replaced with 'Converse'. 4. Conversational Prompts Similar to Bing, there is the inclusion of prompts to then enter conversational mode. This is where the ChatGPT-equivalent experience begins, where users can enter a similar UI to Bard. 5. 10-Blue-Links Below the generative AI, the 10-blue-links remain as they always have. This is an aspect of ChatGPT that is missing, so should still be considered as an opportunity to publishers with the way that searcher behaviour has changed. Google also looks to be proposing bold titles, along with other changes to text styling/positioning. 6. Tailwind Icon The Tailwind icon at the top is what signifies that generative AI is enabled for the user. Shortly, Google will be sending out invites to test out the new features. As mentioned, if you get the invite and want to test it out but are located outside of the US, a VPN should do the trick. As an overall opinion of the current state of Search, I'm more excited than concerned. Google has clearly not been satisfying users for some queries, which has led to the uprise of ChatGPT. As long as Google prioritises publishers (which they say they are), this could lead to more traffic opportunities. As always, I'll be documenting changes as they arise, so make sure to follow along and I'll keep you in the loop. #ai #google #seo #searchengineoptimization
