@alenaidesign Glad you found my yearly twitter post then! Factorio and similar games show systems abstractions so clearly - happy I wasn’t the only one seeing the parallels. Good point around abstraction of specialization - niche parts can be trained and added into the mix.

I was looking for someone to have this discussion with! Turns out this person was my CDA partner 😂 For sure, I’m seeing tons of parallels here. The idea of fine-tuning or specializing general models into task-specific ones just like refining ore (highly general deposit) into steel and then into engines; optimization of trains and belts for efficient transportation of resources; blueprints in factorio and LLM.txt files (@roringtonj has done some really cool work there); and finally, in factorio the more you layer up, the more productive the system becomes but also difficult to debug; same with AI. I think about this every time I play the game 😅 glad to know this insanity is shared!

I don't usually post on here but had this thought I might elaborate on later: If you've ever played Factorio, you know where AI is headed. Today's world is like playing Minecraft or the very start of Factorio.

Today I'm excited to announce Tomorrow: an AI-native product studio. We're completely rethinking what a product studio can be in the AI era…small teams, creative vision, minimal funding and intense focus. tomorrowstudio.ai @tmrwai

AI models, AI Agents, fleets of agents - these are layers built on top of each other that have a multiplicative effect on productivity. Like in Factorio, how can we expect to go to space unless we really figure out to keep layering up? Do we really want to keep hitting at ore?

Gather materials by hand, painstakingly hit nodes until you get what you need. It just feels so tedious. AI brings about the meta. Automation on top of automation. We're so focused on the playing the early game that we don't realize just how many layers of automation we can have.

@MikkoH Wow this is super cool! I listened to the whole thing and it was spooky how good the cadence of speech was throughout

@jmwind Not part of the core message but love the terms gold/bronze plating specifically in the context here 👍

Today, I lead a team of 4—my last gig was with a squad of 4k. Believe it or not, the roles are exactly the same. Whether you're a team lead or a CTO, the job remains unchanged. Many books and gurus insist on change. "What got you here won’t get you there," they say. But let’s be real: from startup hustle to post-IPO swagger, it’s all the same gig. Your mission? Hunt down and grow top talent, craft a killer product that people adore, stay close to customers, stay close to tech changes, and balance short-term wins with long-term gains. And hey, make sure your greatness bar this year tops last year's. I've pondered why people push the whole "change to succeed" spiel. Maybe it’s because we stumble into roles like team lead by accident. But you can rock that role and pick up all the skills needed to be a CTO from there. I spent over a decade leading small teams, learning the ropes. Sure, I've heard the call to change—and failed by listening to it. Personal growth matters, but team size? Not so much. But wait, as a CTO, you're supposed to think light-years ahead. Guess what? So does a team lead. You gotta grasp the biz context, gauge the code's rust factor, and decide what areas to gold or bronze plate. A CTO who only thinks too far into the future is fatal, same for a team lead. You have to bounce between future and now daily. As a team lead or a CTO, you can't do it all alone. Different scales, different timelines, but hey, same old grind. With age comes wisdom—and more tools in your kit—but the core job? Still the same.

@MikkoH Agreed. I find heavy usage of acronyms ends up being an artificial barrier of entry and can lead to gate keeping which just sucks overall.

I took one week of vacation and I had 3 new acronyms to learn on my first day back 🤣 I worry if AI/ML techniques and models continue to have acronyms as names our entire language will be acronyms in one years time. The language around this technology needs to evolve

I’ve seen a lot of hot tech topics on Twitter but this discourse around nothing of value has been built in tech in the last decade has to be the worst. 🚮
