The AFR is being disingenuous here. They promote the Norway petroleum tax scheme and while acknowledging the different economic structure (state ownership), they still don’t help people understand the physical differences between Norway and Australia. These differences are: More of Norways revenue is from oil than gas - Australia exports a very small amount of oil. Norway exports gas by pipeline at EU prices - Australia exports LNG at Asian prices. LNG plants and ships and terminals cost more than a pipeline. Norway gas is lower cost - conventional in shallow water near shore. 30% of Australian gas is onshore in QLD, the rest is offshore in deep water miles from anywhere.

The only figures the ATO would have is the figures provided by the gas companies. And no doubt accepted by the ATO as correct, without any of the aggressive auditing that the ATO applies to the small businesses to their figures
