@zermatist The natural 0bjection from someone with a PhD(smarter and more accomplished than me) will be "of course it isn't meant to be read aloud, it is an encoding of preternatural thought." Btu since I am posting from the year AD 1350 this doesn't matter to me

@stgggs Yeah it's just a hideous run-on sentence, simply put. Read it aloud and it sounds like a little kid who's about to run out of breath. You can use all the same nouns and divvy the sentence up into at least three sentences, and it would sound more like a mature adult speaking.

To me, what jumps out about the sentence is its total lack of discipline. This is the way I'll start to write if I'm drunk, or if I find some other way of suspending my internal editor, the little voice in my head that reminds me "you are communicating to actual people"

The Butler sentence is obvsly not clear in the sense of (1) though ofc it’s not intended to be. To know whether it’s clear in the sense of (2), you’d have to possess the field-specific knowledge to make that judgment

@zermatist If the writing is illegible due to poor construction, and it even lacks poesy or musicality, what remains? Excessive charity toward the "original thought" that spawned the text? This is the "field-specific knowledge" to which OP refers

@zermatist The extract's writing is terrible with respect to syntax and grammatical construction. Common complaints have little or nothing to do with terminology as OP implies/ Read aloud it sounds like shit - a simple fact
