PLAYERS: "You don't ever judge how you play by how you shoot the ball or how many points you score. You always judge how good you play by how your effort and whether you play to the best of your ability and you executed.” ~ Geno Auriemma video from @Jammer2233

Michael Jordan said, "It was the turning point of my life." In the summer of 1980, Michael Jordan had just finished his junior year at Laney High. It was his first year on varsity as a starter. He had a great year, but he wasn't being heavily recruited until UNC reached out to invite him to their summer camp. Dean Smith and UNC wanted to keep his recruiting under wraps because they saw his potential. He came to the camp with kids of all ages including other recruits. Michael DOMINATED. The talent level wasn't the best, but he knew he could compete. After the camp, Michael's coach wanted to get him more exposure and see how good he truly was. UNC assistant coach Roy Williams helped get Michael into the Five-Star camp in Pittsburgh. This camp is where the best players played, there were 17 All-Americans and many other top recruits competing for 2 weeks. Michael Jordan said, "I was so nervous, my hands were sweating. I saw all these All-Americans and I was just the lowest thing on the totem pole. Here I was, a country boy from Wilmington." He played in his first game and his athleticism was immediately on display. He would fly through the air and soar to the basket. Michael realized that he had something the other players didn't have. The more he played, the more confident he became. He started to think, "Maybe I can play with these guys." Howard Garfinkel ran the camp and had a definition for players like Michael Jordan; he called them 1-possesion players because all you have to do is see them once and know they will be great. His legend grew over those 2 weeks. He was said to have scored 40 points in just 1 half of play versus another team. He won the MVP of the All-Star game and won 8 other trophies. That camp put Michael Jordan on the map and schools besides UNC now started to recruit him. Michael Jordan looking back said, "It was the turning point of my life." Takeaway: Confidence is a journey of self-discovery and growth. We all experience fear and self-doubt, but it's our competence that builds our confidence. These feelings are universal and are natural responses to challenging situations. However, it is through learning, practice, and hard work that you build and strengthen your confidence. Michael Jordan felt those feelings before camp, but he leaned on his mastery of the game. When you've done the work and practiced hard, pressure is an opportunity for you to rise. "If you are confident you have done everything possible to prepare yourself, then there is nothing to fear." - Michael Jordan (later in life) - - - Follow me @coachajkings for more actionable ideas on mindset, resilience, and leadership.
