Here's a short and sweet list of the most common things you typically need a **state ID** or **driver's license** (especially a REAL ID-compliant one as of 2025+) for in the US: - **Driving** a vehicle (driver's license only) - **Boarding domestic flights** (REAL ID required at airports since 2025) - **Buying alcohol**, tobacco, or other age-restricted items - **Entering certain federal buildings**, military bases, or nuclear facilities - **Proving identity/age** at bars, clubs, or events - **Picking up prescriptions** or controlled medications at pharmacies - **Opening a bank account** or certain financial transactions - **Employment verification** (often as a List B document for I-9 form) - **Voting** in some states (as proof of ID when required) - **Renting a car**, hotel room, or apartment (landlords often ask) - **Police stops** or official interactions (to identify yourself) The list can go on. It's basically the go-to photo ID for everyday adult life when a passport isn't handy. And just so we’re clear most Americans don’t have a passport because they have a state ID/drivers license. If you don't drive, a state ID covers most of the same uses except driving!

A lot of people will say that it’s the cost of doing & owning a business some of the stuff I deal with, but I tell you what. It’s exhausting and disheartening, especially when I try to go above and beyond and do way more than a normal employer would do for their employees. Quick little rundown One of my employees would’ve hit his year being with the company next Monday. As of recently, his quality of work has kind of gone downhill, he’s been tardy multiple times, calling out of work, etc. we literally gave extended time off for the holidays, but then his family “contracted the flu” so he was off two additional days past our holiday time off . Then, according to him had a crazy family mishap which caused him to miss a week worth of work. I gave it to him off with no questions asked. I even paid him for it when he didn’t have any PTO time left. I sent a meal to the house so they didn’t have to worry about cooking etc. scheduled to come back to work the following Monday and then calls out again that Sunday night saying he then again contracted the flu and missed four more days of work. That’s 46% of working hours and he’s missed since the start of the new year. So he’s already been on the radar. mind you this employee was paid very well and had a sliding scale bonus fee for hours turned that he never seemed to want to work hard enough to earn, etc.. Come to find out my newest employee that I hired was going around, trying to familiarize himself with our shop software and tools that we pay for and provide the techs. He noticed there was a bunch of vehicles in there that have never been in our shop nor are they types of vehicles we even service. We called the company and guess who has been logging in outside of working hours? That exact employee who has been missing a ton of work. So basically he’s been missing work whether he has legit reasons to be excused or not, and doing side work with my software that I pay for. He’s profiting to make money. Which goes right against my company policy, for the no compete and using our provided tools etc He was confronted immediately and denied it all, but unfortunately, there’s no denying it because it shows which user logs in and username and the IP address and where it was used. Even for what vehicle even showing the Vin, etc. Of course he got instantly Defensive . His excuse was he was looking up these vehicles for friends labor times. I’m sorry, but I didn’t think there’s 35 people that I even know on a daily basis that would call me and ask me for workshop manual instructions, labor guide times Etc. coincidentally it just happened to be on most of the days he was out of work. He packed up his shit and left. I gotta stop doing nice things for my employees because this shit really rubs me the wrong way that you can steal from somebody who has been so good to you.
