@stormbruiser @Veeringwindswx Wow, thanks! I was trying to google data to see how this current heat event stacks up against previous ones that hit in August and September. I’m curious if there’s some database that has all this info.

The extraordinary western US heat dome peaks today — with 596 decameters observed in San Diego at 12z, this smashes the March record by 6 dm (dating back to 1956). Prior to this, the earliest instance of 596 dm was on June 6 (2010).

@Garrett8856929 @Veeringwindswx Highest heights on the 12Z soundings at KVBG were 593 dm on 9/25/10 and 591 dm on the 26th and 27th. Warmest temps at 700mb on the Sept 2010 soundings at KVBG and KNKZ were 14-15C, compared to 14.8C off of the KNKZ and KVEF (Las Vegas) this morning (3/19/2026).

@Veeringwindswx Anybody have data of that heat dome from September 2010 that set the highest temp in L.A.?

@Garrett8856929 @Veeringwindswx L.A./KCQT at USC hit 113F at 12:15 p.m. PST on 9/27/2010. The ASOS malfunctioned shortly afterwards so it might have gotten hotter. 500 heights at KNKZ/Miramar on the 00Z soundings for the 25th-28th were 593, 594, 592 and 589 dm. (i.e., the late afternoons of the 24th to 27th).

@Lageraemia @edgarrmcgregor Very true --- and your typical weather stations "in the old days" tended to be very conservatively sited (above grass with excellent exposure, or on rooftops), which promoted conservative maximum temps on the hottest days.

@edgarrmcgregor @stormbruiser That doesn't necessarily mean that its cause entirely by C02 though. Urban environments are different to 100 years ago, so its not an apples to apples comparison.

@ViennaYachtClub @edgarrmcgregor Given the 100F at Azusa on 3/10/1916, it is not the first winter 100F temperature in L.A. County. The other three stations with old winter 100s are in "intermediate" valley areas of Riverside County.

@WeatherProf Yep, I wish they would not use RAWS stations for highest temp in the nation. On sunny afternoons when winds are fairly light they just go too high by several degrees F. The RAWS stations typically enjoy excellent exposure which helps to mitigate the problem some, fortunately.

@ThailandVenture @WeatherProf Pierce College in Woodland Hills and San Gabriel FD both hit 101F on March 26, 1988, according to the WRCC web site. Chatsworth, Simi & Monrovia had 100F that day. Also in March: on the 13th in 1920, San Fernando hit 98F; and 98F on the 10th in 1916 at Pasadena.

@WeatherProf The hottest temperature ever recorded in March for Los Angeles County is 99°F, which occurred on March 29, 1879, in downtown Los Angeles (the official long-term record station for the area, with records dating back to 1877 via the National Weather Service and historical sources).

Otherworldly? Sounds over the top, but from the perspective of a meteorologist that’s how out of whack this looks. It’s like nothing we’ve seen before in March. It’s so abnormal that the heat dome causing this heat may even break various records (500mb ERA-5 1950-present) for April and May too! It will likely be just as unusual as the bonkers 2021 Pacific NW heatwave. Below is a map from @burgwx It shows 850mb (5,000 ft) temperature records. The magenta shows where this heat will break records - Almost everywhere - through early next week. Let’s be clear: A heatwave like this was virtually impossible before global warming. Vast research shows Climate change makes EVERY heatwave more likely, more intense, larger and longer lasting. And these type of previously unheard of events are now starting to become an every few years event.

While Iranian-Americans celebrated in Westwood, protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles to oppose the Trump administration's attacks against Iran. Protesters, including actress and activist Jane Fonda, say they are concerned that the strikes will cost American lives and innocent civilian lives in Iran, and say they are frustrated that the attack was launched without Congressional approval. @RWB_American The entire system of concrete-lined channels and dams was designed for FLOOD CONTROL and not for saving water. The L.A. basin flood control system is working exactly as designed. Do you have a place to store all of this L.A. River flow?

With all the rain on the west coast, California's water reservoirs should be full and and ready to supply water to fight fires. I suspect that is not the case and California just let the rain water flow into the ocean.
