Pitch count was invented in 1988. It counts pitches. That’s it. It doesn’t know if the bases were loaded. It doesn’t know if you threw 6 two-strike pitches in a row. It doesn’t know your arm is still carrying Tuesday’s outing into Friday’s game. STRA/IN does. 🧵 Thread below.

I always try to keep a wide angle lens on me during games just in case a play comes flying towards me. So far in my few seasons shooting baseball, no one has ever really come close. Last night Wilson Contreras gave me a scare on back to back at bats!

FINAL/7: No. 21 #OkState 13, Arizona 1 Impressive response from OSU. The offense erupts for a season-high 17 hits and four HR, while Ethan Lund — 13 Ks, 2 H, 1 ER — logs a complete game. OSU goes to 35-19 and 17-12 in Big 12 play. It will go for the series win tomorrow

The secret sauce behind #OkState’s hot streak over the past month? A team meeting days before OSU’s series at Texas Tech. I asked Holliday what he said to his team in that moment.

@PitchingNinja In our May 6th batch of data, he’s a consistent leader in STRA/IN. He’s not just producing incredible results, he’s doing it at a clip of almost 14% more efficiently than league average.

Paul Skenes had a 67.50 ERA after his first start. His ERA this season now is: 1.98. Career ERA is: 1.97. And, he hasn't walked a batter in a month (April 13)

Last week doubled the best week we've had as a company. Really neat to see the growth over the past three years. We've also updated our RE24 boards so coaches can see in-depth where players are providing value.

@PodcastDoesnt While Tarik wasn’t in our watchlist, these guys who had huge spikes in STRA/IN were that you mentioned on the show. Our dataset just goes back to Opening Day of this year and we’re trying to build it out, but the idea of this metric is still new.

8 ARMS. ONE PATTERN. Glasnow. Webb. Lowder. Povich. Eflin. Ragans. Senga. Williamson. Eight starting pitchers currently on the IL across eight different organizations. Different injuries. Different teams. Different reasons. But before they went down, the data was already telling a story: 7 of 8 recorded at least one Heavy-band STRA/IN inning (≥65) before injury → Cohort peak STRA/IN averaged 68.8 — well above the league baseline of ~61.5 → Five carried peaks above 70: Povich (74.9), Ragans (73.7), Webb (72.7), Williamson (70.9), Lowder (70.9) → Eflin had only one start in our window but recorded the largest late-game velocity fade in the cohort at −1.47 mph STRA/IN measures real pitching arm stress on a 20-80 scouting scale. Heavy band starts at 65. Danger band at 75. Across 4,409 outings this season pitch count and STRA/IN carry r² = 0.0036 — they're measuring nearly independent dimensions of arm load. Pitch count alone cannot see what these innings actually cost. What we won't claim: 8 pitchers is not a study. A matched control cohort is required to confirm the gap is statistically meaningful as well as much more data for model maturity. That validation is the next step. What we will say: the directional signal is real. The pattern was visible in the data before the IL placements were announced. That's worth sharing now. Full working paper, methodology, and dataset available on request. #sabermetrics

What’s the value of the most consistent reliever in all of baseball? Someone that can go every day/every other day, get the guys back in the dugout quickly, and shut down any portion of the lineup is a dream. Bridging the gap between starter and closer is a tremendous logistical venture for any Manager to navigate, and tougher for a Front Office to manage and maintain with Pitching Coaches. To answer the question, Toronto put the value at $37M through 2029 and right now that might be a bargain. This man is durable and is earning outs faster than most arms at the MLB level today. x.com/PitchingNinja/…
