Emotional because my father used to use his extremely limited knowledge of email to send me unsolicited & unpleasant commentary on my lesbian lifestyle choices! Now he uses it to send me & my wife things like this

This is my favorite tweet I’ve made because of how relevant it continues to be. But it bothers me that I said “write a joke” instead of “make a joke.” Why did I choose to sound so ESL? So I will be publishing a revised version soon.

@eshear @Laszlo_Vincze @stationerycar My point is that in our real world, a human in a clean room cannot carry out Newcomb's to the text against strangers (or, say deciders flipping coins): it would require true psychic powers. The proper term I used should have been "normal human"

The most crucial question about a thought experiment that usually goes unasked: how exactly did we become aware of the rules of this particular experiment?

@eshear @Laszlo_Vincze @stationerycar I think then we are just talking about yomi/RPS, which is in itself interesting, but IMO not a paradox. Does Newcomb's hold up if the guesser is human? I think there is still interesting stuff in there, but I think it's all in the definition of the oracle

@Laszlo_Vincze @stationerycar @eshear I think "this being accurately can predict your actions even when you know that it's trying to predict your actions in an adversarial game-theoretical context' is the core of the Paradox, and the decision/money are hangers-on that get all the attention. Just my opinion!

@bobo_circus Absolute cowardice that so much of contemporary art pretends that our reality has not been subsumed by Computer. We just get endless period pieces set in 2009 that won't admit that fact

@midi_wizard yeah but think of all the good it's done in educating the kids today all about how the CIA uses our wifi routers to bluebeam project demon aliens into our living rooms. Good art has impact

@FJSchreiber @thesasho the long back and forth over the technical definition of a "retraction" to avoid deleting a Very Wrong Post is some fairly grim stuff

@stationerycar @eshear ...arithmetic while treating infinity as a variable, we also can't meaningfully solve linguistic statements hinging on functional infinities (i.e. your typical One True God's Omnipotence and Omnipresence) (2/2)

@bwishart @Srirachachau I was disturbed by the idea that one could permanently become stuck in a world so clearly devoid of the possibility of joy, whimsy and meaning, then even more so by the fact that the world presented as such is simply our own

Just posting this interaction for reference. This is how you politely and appropriately celebrate April fool’s day. There’s no need to trick or prank your friends. Once you betray someone’s trust, you can’t take it back. Stay safe out there and celebrate responsibly.

@bethanyshondark ours was going through a *bad* divorce (we later found out, she's from the area) and, upon getting the shots, it was apparent that her artistic choices that day..uh... reflected that.

@PurpyNFL I made it almost all the way through this video with the mistaken understanding it was itself an O'Malley; the lack of punchlines was basically the only thing that snapped me out just before the end, wowww
