The Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025 has been passed in the ICT — a major win for child rights. At @IDEAS_Pak, we’ve worked on this issue for over 5 years, including this 2020 report that lays out the far-reaching costs of child marriage: 🔗 ideasdev.org/publications/c…

On this #InternationalHumanRightsDay, I urge my fellow human beings: If you seek equality, extend it to others. If you desire freedom from discrimination, stop discriminating against others. If you experience ethnic, religious, gender, or sectarian bias, speak out against it wherever it exists. If you advocate for equality in other nations, ensure equal opportunities at home as well. If you seek dignity and protection, make sure others are treated with the same respect. If you fight for religious freedom or the right to choose for yourself, honor the same freedom for others. If you value freedom of expression, be open to hearing others’ views. Human rights are universal, not selective. There is no "us" versus "them." In this age of rising populism, standing by the truth is an act of courage. In a world plagued by war, fear, and climate change, don’t be afraid to challenge the powerful. Don’t fear being "canceled" or ostracized by your circles, communities, or even society at large. Standing up for your principles rather than your political, ethnic, religious, or gender affiliations may be difficult, and you may face backlash, but do not be afraid. Speak the truth and stand with everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, gender, or class. Once again, there is no “us” and “them,” only “we” as one human race. At the launch of “Malkiamana” by Shakila Haider at @LifeAtLUMS, an art series highlighting the stories of Hazara women, their resilience, suffering, and struggles, was presented as part of a 16-country research project on women's movements and struggles across South Asia, led by @su_pwr and @IDS_UK. This is the first research project to include audiovisual representations of these struggles. The study, focusing on women's movements in Pakistan, features issues such as the @AuratMarch Home-Based Women Workers, Anti-Child Marriage campaigns, and the Hazara women's struggle. The Hazara women's struggle began in Balochistan in 2001, where peaceful protests and sit-ins emerged as a response to violence. This movement can be considered the first significant women-led movement in Balochistan, driven by Hazara women demanding the right to life and protection. However, these protests did not exist in isolation, as they were set against the backdrop of patriarchy, tribalism, and a conservative society. The research paper examines the care, backlash, successes, and strategies within this movement, while the accompanying miniature illustrations capture the oral history in visual form.
