@DominicSelwood @RobertePotente @melibeus1 @BLMedieval Sorry Dominic I’ve nearly given up twitter but - they are ‘h quadratum’ (B natural) and ‘b rotundum’ (B flat) both required by the hexachord system. Take a look at stuff on this. With both it is possible to play all scales of the period.

@RobertePotente @melibeus1 @BLMedieval @succentor Thanks! The manuscript is 12th or 13th century from the looks of it. So Catholic. Therefore why letters? And all the other notes are naturals, so why introduce only a Bb and not other flats or sharps? This just gets more fascinating!!!

@SimonG54 @nicholsonorgans There was an organ in Austria which had one labelled 'Rauschwerk' - this being both the term for reeds and a pun on 'rausch' which I believe means drunk...

Dear Twitter friends, I’ve decided to give up Twitter for Lent. I may have to operate on various work accounts, but I won’t be reading or tweeting on this account from midnight tonight, until Sunday 4th April. I might find I don’t miss it... let’s see!

@jonathanclinch It actually handles the prelude pretty well. I’m going to record it for one of our online chapel services. I’ll need a registrant, though... handily I have one at home.

The liturgy for Quinquagesima marked the approach of meatless Lent with a passage from Genesis: 'Dixit dominus ad Noe, finis universae carnis venit', 'The Lord said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come'. A solemn reminder of human frailty, but also a bit of a liturgical joke...

#organselfie in a rather chilly St James’s Church, Radley. But very grateful to have somewhere to practice now our @RadleyMusic organ is being removed.

The buttery yellow walls in the nave glow. The chancel is lower, darker, closer, creating an air of mystery. The walls are curvaceous. The squinches throw shadows. The small space seems cavernous. 4/

Brithdir has powers of transportation. Behind a thicket of fleshy, fuchsia rhododendrons, a rugged granite church hides. Inside, the stippled plaster walls are daubed in burnt sienna, the ceiling soars in royal azure. But the Mediterranean vibe doesn’t end there... #thread

@DrJACameron @QuireMemes We know Spem was inspired by an Italian 40 part motet. We suspect it might have been Ecce beatam lucem, although if so, I don’t think Tallis had heard it because the handling of the parts is so different. I conducted some of the sub choirs on this: open.spotify.com/album/2BITe7Vd…
