Congratulations to Mayor Mamdani. He inherited a huge budget deficit, brought it down to zero, and still invested in childcare, housing and city infrastructure.
When municipal governments stand with working families, not billionaires, there is nothing they cannot accomplish.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor
When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit. Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero. We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing. Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run. That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.

🚨BREAKING: The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) has allowed Alabama to select a different map for this year’s congressional elections in a stunning, last-minute move to interfere with another state primary election that has already begun. democracydocket.com/news-alerts/sc…

I think Virginia Democrats should do whatever it takes to ram through this map. That’s what Republicans would do.

@AdamParkhomenko No. The VA Attorney General lobbied the court to not render judgment until the referendum was over.

@VanJones68 Van, racially partisan districts are benefiting which community? 3 guesses. 😁 Gutted VRA? Did you read the VRA? There is no expectation for crazy districts to be drawn to ensure a certain race of elected representatives. VRA is about opportunity; not outcome.

Here's the problem with redrawing maps. You're telling some voters they matter more than others. That's not how a democracy works.
Last week the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Tennessee moved within days - carving up Memphis's majority-Black district. The state's only Democratic seat. Gone.
A Republican senator said it on the record, “This bill represents Tennessee's attempt to maximize our partisan advantage."
Not election security. Partisan advantage.
Here's what’s missing. An Economist/YouGov poll last month found 71% of Americans (including Republican voters) say states should not draw districts to intentionally favor one party. These politicians aren’t just making decisions that block their opponents - they’re ignoring their own constituents.
When neither side trusts the maps, neither side trusts the results. That road ends badly for everyone.

A really tough week.
I am doing everything I can to spread the word about the threats to democracy and how we can fight back. You can help me by subscribing to Democracy Docket for free and sharing its content with everyone you know. Thanks. bit.ly/4qmEiFz

Last month in Virginia, the people made their voices heard at the ballot box and voted for new Congressional maps.
Today, the Virginia Supreme Court ignored the will of the people and overturned those democratically chosen maps.
This ruling gives a boost to Donald Trump's effort to rig the 2026 elections and the Republicans' long game to attack voting rights.
We are rightfully outraged, but we will not give up. We must continue our fight to restore the power of the people.

More than three million Virginians cast their ballots in Virginia’s redistricting referendum, and the majority of Virginia voters voted to push back against a President who said he is ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats in Congress with a temporary and responsive referendum. They made their voices heard.
I am disappointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling, but my focus as Governor will be on ensuring that all voters have the information necessary to make their voices heard this November in the midterm elections because in those elections we — the voters — will have the final say.

@GuntherEagleman @WallStreetApes @Justinjpearson Justin, you appear to be upset with SCOTUS ending race-based districting. That right?

This is the POS Tennessee congressman who verbally attacked a state trooper today!
Let him hear you, he is tagged. @Justinjpearson

@GavinNewsom There can't be any such thing as a Black District. Don't you understand the SCOTUS judgment? There is no Indian, Korean, Indonesian or Filipino district.
