Yesterday was a pilgrimage I won’t forget. We reached“Tiruvannamalai”, “Tamil Nadu, India” at 3:59 a.m., and began our Girivalam 14 km on bare foot. The road where lakhs of people walk could have maintained well but sorry to say that no official is interested in that. After walking 14 kms, exhausted and tired, we joined the darshan queue by 8 a.m., filled with hope. But the reality was disheartening. No separate line for women, elders, or children just pushing, pulling, and exhaustion. No place to rest, no water, and no compassion from authorities, even when people felt faint. From 8 in the morning to 3:50 in the afternoon, we were herded through cramped paths, standing in muddy areas, with not even a basic seat. After hours of struggle, we got darshan yet even then, the temple premises were harsh, pouring water to prevent us from sitting. Such a sacred place, with so many devotees, deserves better. My heart aches for how poorly it’s managed. I hope we, as pilgrims and management, can ensure dignity and care for future visitors. Outside, trash and filth surrounded this pilgrim site. It’s heartbreaking such devotion, yet such neglect. I truly hope this sacred place can offer pilgrims the dignity we all deserve. What was your experience?
