Look, I’ve already pointed out the issues I have with Bohemian Rhapsody, but the difference is that both Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman are structured around building toward their big set pieces. Bohemian Rhapsody steadily escalates toward the Live Aid performance, while Rocketman uses “I’m Still Standing” as a payoff that ties directly into the character’s emotional journey. In Michael, the “Thriller” recreation feels like it’s ripped out of a completely different movie, more like a checklist moment than something the story naturally earns. Yes, “Thriller” is obviously a major part of Michael Jackson’s life, but the sequence plays like it could’ve been its own short film, rather than something that grows organically out of the narrative of a biopic movie.
